It's a game! You guys are way too involved. I called and wrote MSG last fall, too, and was happy they were there. Our kids got on TV! Wow! They got noted in a magazine and online! Wow! Are you guys as interested in their grades? We should be proud of what our kids do, whether there are fans or not. We should encourage them to play hard, and celebrate their wins, but this kind of attitude will get our kids hurt. Xavier did not stay for the meal served by the Greenwich team after the game, and probably should have, but maybe it's because there are too many fans like you guys who act like this is a matter of great international importance. The kids should be able to put both their losses and their wins behind them. Congratulations to Greenwich for a great season and game. Congratulations to Xavier for a history of success. We'll all see other again.

O'Hara: Yes I am still here. My son last played for Greenwich in 2007, and I have made every Greenwich-Xavier game since. Even the ones on Randall's Island at inconvenient times, in lousy weather. I am not going away. So yes, you will see me next year, even if it is on a Friday in rush hour. Come look me up. I will buy you a drink to help drown your sorrows after the game. Again, I wish Xavier well in the tournament. However, I hope YOUR flight gets diverted to Moose Jaw, Saskatchawan, and your luggage gets sent to Khazakstan. Did the full game ever get televised on MSG?

Dailey, In 2007 thyere were three African-American players on our team. All three were born and bred in Brooklyn and all three were of Haitian descent. Every member of that team was American-born. None had British accents. Perhaps they were putting you on with a fake accent - they were teen-aged boys after all. Any low turnout at last week's match would have been primarily due to the fact that the match was a non-league friendly that kicked off at 6:00 on a Friday evening. Have you ever tried to leave work at 5:00 on a Friday afternnon and drive from New York City to Greenwich? The drive takes @ 2 hours. In the end, I'm really not concerned with how many people are in the stands or how many articles are written about us. Our concern is teaching kids the rugby & good sportsmanship. We're eager to help other programs get established and have helped teams do so. Last year when Fordham Prep students wanted to start a team our staff went out and found them their first coaches.

Still there, Dailey? Someone from Greenwich may well have called MSG Varsity about the Xavier-GHS game. Last fall, when Kevin and I discussed possible coverage of h.s. rugby by MSG Varsity this spring, I said that the only area schools that were competitive with Xavier were GHS and Fairfield Prep. (Who knew that Fordham Prep would come so far so fast?) Kevin said he would consider Xavier-GHS, but we didn't discuss it again. The e-newsletter I sent out before the Xavier-GHS game included the Greenwich Time article on the McQuaid win. I wrote that GHS was looking for the upset and warned that the GHS fans would be out in force. The Xavier turnout was what it was. But be real-- kickoff was in the middle of Friday rush hour. Our fans weren't motivated to leave work early and battle I-95 traffic to watch Xavier play a team it smoked last year and who hadn't beat us in 12 years. So GHS upset us. Congratulations . See you next year at Randall's (on a Friday at 6 PM).

Joe Sweeney: I am quite certain I spoke to two kids with British accents who started for the 2007 Xavier team. I had never seen them before. One of them was a black kid, which is one of the reasons I recall it him so vividly (even fewer black kids played rugby back then) He was a flanker I think. The other kid was a back. As to making excuses, well, O'Hara seems to be full of them, and he also seems to want to dwell on past performances. Aside from making this years Xavier kids feel worse, I cannot imagine what he is getting at. Finally, I am sorry, but the lack of press coverage and the lack of fans on your side indicates laziness at best, and indifference at worst. That is not good for rugby or Xavier, and portends a poor future. Good luck in Nationals. I mean it. We have lost every year, but frankly your kids are very likeable and sportsmanlike. I wish them well.

Dailey, I'm not sure which National Championship year you are speaking of, but we've had only one British citizen on our team in the 19 years I've coached Xavier. He, Eric Chow, moved to New York City at age 14 and eventually started at flanker his senior year when we finshed in 4th place in 2000. While there are 8.5 million people in our great city, only 1,000 of them attend Xavier High School. Our students gain admission soley on their academic merits. We get great kids and we help them become great rugby players. We own all of our performances and make no excuses when we don't reach the standard of which we are capable. Again, congratulations to Greenwich on a great match last week. We look forward to keeping a great rivalry going next year. By the way, perhaps our lack of media coverage comes from the fact that we're in a city of 8.5million with over 100+ high schools served by 4major newsppapers, not a town 70,000 with 1 public high school & 2 local papers.

OHara: as to your whining about lack of a home field, how about I whine about the fact that Xavier is in a city with 8.5 MILLION people, and the town of Greenwich has roughly 70 thousand people? And furthermore, the year you won Nationals, I noted that you had at least a few kids with British accents playing for you. So apparently, the pool of athletic talent Xavier can recruit from is a little bigger than Greenwich. But Greenwich has a field on it's campus. You are right, that is unfair!

OHara: Whatever media strategy you are using does not work. Plain and simple. Your side had no fans. There was no mention in any of the major NY papers that the number one ranked team (you were number one BEFORE the game - is that right?) was beaten by a team they had dominated in past years. Connecticut papers had plenty of coverage, and I am pretty sure Greenwich got MSG there. As to the NY Post, the story about Xavier winning the National Championship did not appear until a week after the event. The person I spoke to had no idea it had occurred. So maybe you should use your charming personality and actually talk to people. Or perhaps that IS the problem. Whatever. I am sure Greenwich will have more fans next year at Randall's Island then Xavier had this year at Greenwich. After all, the way rankings work, Greenwich should be number 1 next season based on past performance. I KNOW you agree with me there.

To Dailey: I founded Xavier Rugby in 1976 and was head coach (1976-80). I send out regular E-Blasts and e-newsletters to 1,200+ alumni, several per week, year round. I also send press releases to the media, resulting in numerous articles on Xavier Rugby published over the years in the Times, Daily News, Post, Wall Street Journal, ESPN and ESPN Rise. Thanks for calling The Post, Dailey, but they were working off my press releases. By the way, Xavier has won FOUR national titles-- and every Northeastern championship ever played (9) plus 13 East Coast titles. And every Met Union championship but 1 from 1980 to 2011. You know the Met Union, Dailey-- it's the league Greenwich played in. So Greenwich packed that big stadium on its big, beautiful campus. Nice. Xavier has no fields, Dailey. Our "campus" is a building in Manhattan. Anyway, I don't recall many GHS fans down at Randall's Island when Xavier smoked Greenwich by 40 points in 2011. Maybe next year, right?

Nationals needs Greenwich more than Greenwich needs Nationals. In the year Xavier actually won Nationals, Xavier got press coverage in one small story in the NY Post - and that is because I called the Post! Xavier has a fantastic record in the past all right, but frankly, it's promotion of the sport and it's fantastic leaves much to be desired. Greenwich, despite posing "no real threat" to Xavier over the past several years, STILL produced a packed stadium for the game.... the Greenwich side was packed anyway. I felt bad for the Xavier players, with their huge tradition, and it looked like about half the player parents showed up for the game. Perhaps it is best for rugby if Xavier quietly slips into obscurity. The fans of Xavier seem to prefer it that way. Thye do nothing to promote the game. Hopefully however, maybe O'Hara will give something back to the game, and maybe actually go his teams matches.
