Xavier did well and we congratulate them on their wonderful hospitality .It is not correct that the hale boys had their third game in the same time span as the first game was on the west coast of the USA ( 6 hour flight ) v Ireland approx 7 hours flight. It must be remembered that flying time from Perth to New york direct is over 25 hours and probably over 35 hours the route hale boys took .

The standard of rugby in the USA was very high. The two games that i saw on the East Coast showed Gonzaga and Xavier were very strong in the basics of the game and never gave up playing hard. The difference was the ball handling of the Australian boys. They are taught this from a very early stage and they just run at their opponents and fling the ball around more. If the game was taken really seriously, the USA would become world champions. It is a marvellous game for fit and athletic young men teaching valuable lessons of discipline and give and take. Just think also of the saving on the cost of body armour! (I came over from England to watch a grandson play and thoroughly enjoyed what I saw and the hospitality of American friends in DC and in New York) Thank you.

I hear that Hale beat Gonzaga by 70+ points and that the SoCal score was similarly one-sided. Great article and photos, Ed. You should have mentioned, though, that one reason Xavier may have faded in the second half was that they had just returned from their Ireland tour the previous afternoon and were playing their 4th game in 8 days. The Hale-Xavier match kicked off at 10:30 AM Saturday morning. Xavier had defeated a Northern Ireland President's XV in Derry on Thursday afternoon and flown home on Friday. (Their other games were a respectable loss to mighty Blackrock College the previous Saturday and a draw with Clontarf's U19 team on Monday.) Hale was also on tour, of course, but this was their third match in the same time span and they were coming off 3 full days of rest after walloping Gonzaga on Tuesday.
