It's not an adage, its fact. Jesuit of Sacramento...in CA all the best teams have to get past them or get tested by them, teams like Fallbrook, Marin, and Lamorinda come close. There are very good teams outside of that, but the bulk of the best continue to come from the west...the Utah teams are part of that. The left side of this bracket is far weaker...UCSB or SDSU will be the champion...my money's on the Aztecs.

I think the adage of West Coast being the best coast for rugby may have been true up until recently, but the reality is a good portion of the best high school rugby teams for the past four or five years have ben East Coast based. Those kids are now in college and going mainly to East Coast colleges. So it's only natural that the level of East Coast rugby has grown significantly. Add to that the factor of shifting weather patterns with milder winters and falls mean the kids can practice until way later and start way earlier. Davenport vs. Texas will either be a blowout by Davenport or a close win by Texas. UT has some big physical boys playing for them and some decently fast backs.

Gimme' a break about the West Coast. For about 40 years the overwhelming and prevailing trend is when a team from the Colorado-west meets a team from Kansas-east, it is obvious where the rugby is played. There have been good non-Academy teams from the East (Penn State, Dartmouth) over the years, and some rising strengths in the South: But neither good sense nor statistics will let a serious rugby fan believe that the standard on the East coast is anywhere near competitive.

We can go beyond if we keep supporting our RUGBY that in the end it's ours. We are the ones bleeding every weekend for our school. We shout "Saturday is game day" and NCAA does not understand that nor our colleges, but we know in our flesh what that is and 700 million people across the earth as well. Let's teach RUGBY to our kids when the time comes and they will do the same. This is a big family, bigger than 52 states or an organization. Let's shout for our nation in the 7s tournament and for us, the foreigners in the US, let's cheer for the USA Eagles! Let's support USAR and let's marry beautiful women to make epic ruggers. Let's expand RUGBY in our neighborhoods bringing out the RUGBY ball and teaching little kids and teens that anyone can score a try and anyone can pass the RUGBY and have a great time, making new friends, and growing our family: RUGBY. God be with you dear ruggers, blood donors, rugger makers, and amigos.

The NCAA is a regulatory body, they don't provide the scholarships. A " grant in aid " comes from the individual institutions. Also, many of the varsity sports governed by the NCAA are not fully scholarship sports. A d1 baseball team may have only 7-10 scholarships that are divided among the team. Rugby needs support and awareness. Go to the matches, donate time and money to local teams, please support the HS programs.

NCAA, however bureaucratic, still offers scholarships and financial backing on the college level. Some of these student athletes and college programs need that. Maybe with NCAA assistance teams could be subsidized for travel so they would not miss matches.

Who needs NCAA support? What could they possibly add for college rugby except increase expense and bureaucracy? Stop treating rugby like football. The NCAA is about jobs and money at the expense of the student-athlete. USAR is simply about the athlete. We are better off without them.

ENOUGH with all the negative comments! We need to support this sport in order to be sanctioned by the NCAA. Support your team, cheer them on loudly & proudly but remember that it is a game played by gentlemen & ladies. Most of the fans remind me of Shakespeare: tales told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing!

Do i see a third match up between SDSU/UCSB in the near future? 30% of their games this season would have been against eachother. That game is going to be epic if it happens. I also wonder if SDSU/UCSB will be moving up to D1-A. The whole travel/cost issue will limit their ability to compete at a higher level.
