DCM, To seek the National Championship, as a college, you have to have a fully funded program, or you might as well stay home. Who else has played in the final four ? If budget info could be got, I think you would see that the best financed teams rise the highest. You state that Bona gets 30k from a golf tourney. This is HS. They run on less than 20 k a year. If budget money isn't important why was Cal S'ing themselves about becoming a club team. What organization runs good on the cheap ? Mouths are the only thing that run well cheaply. MJ McNerney.

You're right DCM, we aren't at the level of St. Mary's. But they are the hallmark of what a small Catholic school can do and we hope to live up to it one day. Thanks for the feedback.

No, MJ McNerney, New Yorker, I mean teams like Central Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, San Diego State, Arizona State, Utah - that aren't varsity, get paltry resources from their club sports departments, and still manage to get themselves where they need to be. No more blame game in college rugby. And let's also be a little transparent about Bonnies away games: The "thousands of dollars" was for spring break. Four of the five mentioned were on a DC cruise., UMd, and Temple were 50 minute games on the same day: West Virginia and Shippensburg were jamboree games on the same day, towards the end of spring break. And BGSU is a five hour bus ride. (Hardly the schedule of St Mary's – another club sport at another small school.) Im not suggesting that Coach or Bonnies shouldn't be proud: I am calling BS on Juno and MJ McNerney, New Yorker for repeating the same tired rugby meme about "poor us." Put-together a golf fundraiser for Picard and knock-down $30,000 this summer MJ McNerney.

Coach Picard, You certainly should be proud of the way your team played yesterday. As an opposing fan at the game - your team played well all game long and your team put up a valiant fight. Your point makes a lot of sense and you being forthright means alot. Congratulations on a well played season.

-SBU was not offered the bid so the point is moot. Pat asked the question and I answered it. We don't deserve to go anyway, Stony Brook is a worthy Empire rep. -We could travel to NH without a problem. If we would have advanced to the final 4 we would have spent the money. But to travel to California as a losing team wouldn't make any sense. -You are mistaken, we spent thousands of dollars traveling to play UMd, Temple, WVU, Shippensburg, BGSU, and ERC playoffs in NYC. -The best fares from Buffalo to San Francisco are about $415 today. Add in hotel, meals, etc. and the cost would set us back 5 years. -I don't care if I get criticized for this. We are a school of 2,000 people with less than 30 guys on our team. We are proud of the way we played this year and have nothing to be ashamed of. Clarence Picard Head Coach St. Bonaventure University Rugby

I know its a lot of money to raise in a short amount of time, but you would think a club at the level of the Bonnies would hopefully foresee a potential road-trip in the playoffs and start fundraising a little earlier. In my opinion this should actually be one of the responsibilitie s of the alumni. They should be fundraising all year for unexpected trips like this. Another option would have been to win the conference outright and beat Stony Brook in the championship game... Do THAT and you'da been playing in NH...

I don't think it's that St Bonaventure couldn't afford playoffs if the thought it would be beneficial. Winning the Empire Conf was their goal and they would have gone to Hanover. Spending all of their budget to travel to Palo Alto on short notice is not the best use of their assets. For the same price, they can play a lot of games against good local competition. The teams will be better in CA, but they would likely only play once or twice over the weekend.

To DCM, By ambition, I assume you mean monies. Cal, USMA, Navy, BYU, and a few others have large budgets and the advantage of varsity status, which gives rugby access to the athletic facilities that club sports don't get. They also get to give out-of-state players in-state tution. These clubs can afford to be ambitious. 99% of college rugby clubs in the country have budgets equal to about 1/10th of what Cal pays it's coaches ! There are three types S in this world; Bull, Horse, and Chicken. Your statements about crybabying ranks in the B category, but by not putting your name on it, makes it B/C.
Getting tired of the BS excuses of alleged rugby programs (a'hem) out East. A quick search on Google Flights shows many (many) flights to San Francisco out of Laguardia, Philly, etc.on Frontier, US Air, Alaska for $281 - $307 ROUND TRIP for those dates. Too expensive? And a playoff ANYwhere is going to require a long-azz drive outa' Western New York. Did the idea of having playoffs this year surprise you? Never heard of playoffs before? You can't raise $1,000 per head in the course of an ENTIRE year? Was the burden of travel this year too much on the Bonnies? (Syracuse, Brockport, Binghampton, Buffalo, Syracuse) Jesus, did you even leave the state of New York? Stop cryin' that nobody is spoon feeding you. Rugby is taking-off because better teams, with more ambition, are doing more things, to create more resources for themselves. Your excuse is tired a poor.

@juno Explain to me what your probelm is with this? The travel for the teams in the playoffs has been minimized significantly under this system. If you are going to complain about something, at least give a cogent argument beyond "USArugby sucks."
