@blue potato chips: interesting comment regarding the recruiting class from that '09 season. If you look at that article, there's 18 kids. Only 8 of them are still playing for Cal. Maybe that in itself is the problem.

Chatting with a few Old Blues post game. Cal pulled out of CPD because: expense reimbursement to travel was never followed through with...Cal wanted a percentage of the gate from the playoffs....finals week interferred with the playoffs.....there is no money in Cal playing schools like Life, Ark State, etc, and the admin is expecting Jack Clark to bring in revenue. Sounds like ol Jack is trying to pull a fast one on the Bear supporteres. Since when does collegiate rugby make money? Except for Cal it is a club sport. Nice try Jack......instant karma's gonna get you.

An unbelievable game in Moraga yesterday, and yes, St Mary's deserved the win. They outplayed the Bears most of the day. Some great moments: 1. Cal kicks off to start the game, St Mary's knocks on. First scrum to Cal. St Mary's, outweighed by about 20lbs/man in the forwards, blows Cal right off the ball on the first put in. 2. Cheering for the Gaels all game but surrounded by Old Blues. After the final whistle, nothing but handshakes and congrats from several Old Blues on the win and a well played game. Very classy.

Blue Chips...actually because of USA Rugby's 5 year eligibility rules, the majority of this class actually has one more year left of eligibility if I'm not mistaken. According to Cal's website: "Six frosh-sophs were on the field Sunday for the blue and gold and only two of today's players are in their final year of eligibility."...but there are five seniors (according to Cal's roster) listed in the match-day 22. Cross-reference 2007's recruiting release: http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-rugby/spec-rel/081407aae.html In that 2007 group I counted 5 5th year seniors still active on Cal's 2012 roster and two of which played on Saturday, Ring and Deterding.

You'd have to say this recruiting class was a failure. http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-rugby/spec-rel/090208aab.html First ever in Cal's recruiting history?? I think that's the main story here. Usually Cal just reloads. They always have 60 recruited athletes. Its just a matter of the next class stepping in. It looks like, for whatever reason, this class wasn't up to snuff like the previous ones.
