@mcgurk... ok then. that means Santa Clara is out. They don't get an AQ, and since they haven't played any Div I-AA teams, this whole conversation is moot. Live and learn.

If you can't win your conference you are not qualified to be National Champ. UCSB and SDSU should know that if they lose the championship game their season is over. Same for the other 13 conferences. Play in a conference and win it you are guaranteed a shot at the title. Play as an independent and you have to play well and hope the selectors like you with no guarantee. Pick your poison.

Not So Fast: "Penalizing"? That's a bit overstated, wouldn't you say? Thirteen conferences received AUTOMATIC bids for their champion. That's the REWARD for complying with all of the USA Rugby rules. The three remaining spots are FOR EVERYONE ELSE who wasn't a champion. Pick the best three teams and let's get on with it. Santa Clara and Sacramento State are worthy of consideration.

@mcgurk - I think that would be penalizing the other conferences that did things the right way... having 7+ teams, playing non-conf games against Div I-AA opponents, etc. Also, the reason the at-large seeds aren't pre-determined is so they can be based on CURRENT yr performance. You can't make an assumption about strength of a conf THIS yr unless they played non-conf games against teams in other confs in the SAME div. And if you do use recent history, Santa Clara was in Div II in 2010 and lost in the 1st rd of Nat'ls. Given that they won NorCal this year, I can only assume that is a very week conf unless proven otherwise by non-conf games THIS YEAR.

It seems to me that Nor Cal teams like Santa Clara, Sac State and Chico should be commended on staying up in D1-AA. With Cal, Saint Mary's, UC Davis and Cal Poly at the D1-A level, it would have been easy for them to drop down and play in D2 and let Stanford have no choice but to go independent or D-1A. In particular, after a winless season last year, Santa Clara doubled-down by staying up and hiring Paul Keeler to take the program to the next level. He and Jone Naquica have done awmazing things from a confidence building and skill development perspective for the Broncos. Worst to first in one year! One would think that USA Rugby would like to reward that commitment and effort. Their season schedule was ridiculously difficult playing Cal Poly, the Cal frosh/sophs and SFGG men's D1, not to mention having to play Stanford, Chico and Sac State twice. All of the league games were very close.
