so there's a tonne of people here who have a lot to say, to which i reply... were you on the field on saturday? did you lace up your cleats and do anything? i didn't think so. at the end of the day, BYU clearly won. the first half was close because because utah played well and byu didn't. utah's scrum was not superior, they had some good pops, but so did byu... (some people watch the game with 1 eye open it seems) but like i said.. at the end of the day, the wasatch cup is in provo, and byu's real competition is life or arkansas. this weekend isn't going to be easy for utah either, back to back decent teams. go cougs

Utahfan does bring up a good point, though, about the best way to stage what has become a pretty profitable franchise. While South Field is really marginal for the crowd size, it does have the advantage of being a lovely place to play with good spectator lies of sight and an immaculate pitch. Having the game on campus surely allows more students to attend. BYU likely makes more profit on the Utah game than on all of the rest of its home contest put together. The challenge with holding all of the WC matches at Rio Tinto is the 1) the stadium expense (many times more than the cost to the team of South Field), 2) barriers to student involvement with distance and added cost (Utah only gives a discount to its own students, so BYU treats U students equally), 3) low-cost or no-cost broadcasts (since RT charges a significant amount to use their video equipment). I'd love to hear constructive suggestions on how to build the WC without adding more cost.

@Utahfan I'm sorry if I left the impression that I thought the referees were unfair. I'm sure I didn't say that and I certainly didn't mean that. What I did say was that, on Lasike's disallowed try and on several breakaways, the referee was out of position and his support were also missing in action to actually see the play. Simple. No bias implied or intended. It just happened to affect BYU more than Utah in this particular contest. As far as Davies interaction with the Utah scrum, as I understand the rules, and please correct me if I'm wrong, the opposite scrum half just needs to be on the other side of the ball, wherever it is in the scrum, until the ball is out, when all restrictions are removed. Are you saying that he was in front of the ball or that he tackled opposition players before the ball was out? Or do I simply not understand the law correctly? Please help me with this.

utefan & provo spectator: You both are wearing red and blue colored glasses. That's great. That's the beauty of rivalries. It was a great game and good exhibition of why college rugby should be a more important part of USA Rugby's strategic growth.

Provo Spectator, I believe it was actually BYU's decision to not have multiple games per season, as there were 2 matches in one season in 2010. However, going forward, BYU has clearly decided to let their home years host the game at Rio, despite the fact South Field is clearly too small to fit the crowd. And BYU having a powerful scrum? More like a scrumhalf that counldn't stay onsides. He was practically touching Pati every scrum. How the ref missed that is beyond me. Utah's scrums were much better than BYU. And questionable calls always go both ways, don't try to claim BYU's running game was that cheated. If you want to play the reffing card, there were numerous Utah turnovers due to BYU players diving from the side. All in all, the refs did a much better job in reffing this game than years past, so don't complain how BYU was cheated out of tries. And Juszczak was concussed. He went to the hospital after the game.

Just got done watching the game on www.byurugby.com, Great match, tough play. My problem has to do with the unforced turnovers. It continues to amaze me how BYU forwards tend to run away from their support and get isolated. The flip side is that the support chooses to not to follow them into contact. Some rucks were also fairly weak and were countered unsurprisingly well by the Utes. Lots of knock ons, foolish passes while coming in to contact, and getting pushed out of play. I am always so impressed by Lubbe and Davies field vision and decision making while on the run. Several fowards impressed me with their tenacious running, if only their was some equally tenacious support. Overall, a great effort by both teams!

Utah played very well in Saturday's WC match, as they always do. BYU left a bunch of tries on the pitch (4-6), but nobody scores on every close opportunity. A try scored by Paul Lasike in the corner in the first half was ruled held up because all of the referees (and assistants) were out of position to see him dot down. It happens. Several BYU breakaways were disallowed due to somewhat questionable penalties. It's likely one or more of those would have been a try as well. On several occasions, when BYU needed a powerful scrum, they got it. I'd have to say it was a very evenly contested power performance in the scrums, but BYU's back rowers were significantly better than their counterparts. Also, if Utah wants to play BYU more than once per season, all they have to do is say YES. The offer has been on the table for the last three seasons. For some reason, their management doesn't want to play BYU more than once per (conference) season.

All the respect in the world to Utah. they played BYU really tough and their pack rose to the challenge and was the best scrummaging team I think BYU will face all year. However, it isn't mentioned in this article that BYU put the Utes under pressure on a Utah 5 meter put-in that resulted in BYU taking one against the head and Ryan Roundy scoring of an 8-man pick. Both packs were very strong with one getting the better of the other at times. I think the challenge in the forwards was evenly matched, not clearly in Utah's favor. Utah really got a boost from their reserve TH prop (Vickery I believe). He's a great scrummager! It was a very entertaining game that will most likely not be the last time these 2 teams meet this year. Just the observation of a former BYU front-rower.
