I'm sorry but how can blocking be a skill--especially when all the other blockers are as unfit as you... maybe it's a skill but certainly with not many levels on it. Good luck to Hayden tho. Transitioning to AF for him shouldn't be that hard...unless he can't catch a ball

Hayden - good luck and have fun doing it. Roosevelt - i always find it laughable when someone says NFL an NBA players are the greatest athletes around. the argument should be that we have one of the greatest systems for identifying athletic kids in these two sports but there is a big BUT, this system misses how many athletes who don't fully develop until their mid to late 20's? it's a numbers game cuz there's so many kids playing. i just came across late 2010 article about an all NFL rugby team. it was laughable. most of the guys selected would (1) have to lose 30-60 pounds to play especially the choices for prop, and (2) rugby is a completely different game. a player actually has to think versus rote memorization of a play or system. can the NFL and rugby produce athletes that are major crossover stars, absolutely, but keep in mind that great speed, strength, tackling, etc do not translate the same from one to the other. Al's 7's transplants are a great example.

Ok, I now see the point you were initially trying to make, one that I side with. However, Hayden is Australian and came to the US to play college basketball. Hard to put him in the same category as American born-and-breds like Lyle, Billups, Hodges, etc.

One point - Hayden Smith has an opprtunity to be a jet - he has not yet made the team. This is essentially the Jets taking a fairly low risk to look at a big athletic guy in an era when tight ends have a lot of value. Can he catch? Can he run routes? Does he have the ability to shake off blocks? Cane he block? Can he do any or all of the above better than how many other guys looking for a spot on the team in that position? I'm still of the opinion that this is a long shot. But it is a good idea for the Jets to give it a try. I'd still prefer to see him in an Eagles jersey but good luck to him!

You people just love to hate, even on someone who is pointing out something positive. You miss my point..There have been plenty of Americans that have played another sport at a higher level as in college, picked up rugby and then gone on to play professionally overseas (Lyle, Billups, Hodges, Gross to name a few). It seems to say something about our athletes in general, which is that they are superior. Even the ones that play college sports on a DIAA or DIII level can pick up a game relatively late in life and make a living from it. Grant it that we are talking a small sample size but I believe it is more then the world combined that has done the same in an American sport outside of a specialized position (e.g. field goal kicker or punter in the NFL) Richard Tardis (sp?) is the one foreign that I can think of that came here, picked up football & played in the NFL.

Eh Mr. Roosevelt, I'd say that's a pretty big sweeping generalization. This is one guy who hasn't seemed to specialize in any one sport (from the sound of it, you could argue basketball is the one he's focused most of his time and efforts on) but has incredibly well-rounded athletic ability to play college basketball (albeit D2 but still pretty impressive), pro rugby in the Aviva Premiership and at the World CUP (granted, for the USA), and now he's getting a run in the NFL. Considering he's never played football before and is getting a shot at the NFL really highlights the type of athlete he's become through his years playing basketball and rugby. Until we hear of an American replicating what this Aussie has done (ie go over to Aus and play top level Aussie Rules, Cricket, and Rugby), let's not try to make comparisons between us and them. Let's get behind Hayden and hope he has a good run representing rugby players in the NFL!

Nah hayden is going to be my pick for rookie of the year. This guy has the total package. The question is will the jets throw to him enough times? That's the problem with american football. Players have to wait for the ball to be thrown at them or carries. On defense it's about getting reps so the defensive will find the ball. Hayden has all the tools I just hope they give him enough reps. I believe the jets need a TE more than anyone. I also wont be surprised if they draft a TE, but Hayden will still be my pick

What's interesting is that a D-II Basketball player can make it as a professional rugby player in one of the top leagues in the world (or a DI-AA football player, Lyle). Yet is a long shot at making it on an NFL squad as a special teams player and had zippy chance at the NBA. It shows what a gulf there is between our top professional athletes and the top professional rugby players the world over. It would be nice to see more players rejected by the NFL, NBA, etc get recruited to rugby but that is a pipe dream.
