First off it would be impossible to recruit many D1 athletes for a women's rugby team. Women ruggers have the opportunity to play their sport in college. But finding NCAA D1 funding for a womens college rugby team is hardly going to happen in this economic climate. It takes more than an athletic person to succeed on the rugby pitch. Knowing nothing about the Minnesota Valkyrie rugby team, I would absolutely put money on them to beat any team of has-been D1 athletes thrown together and given a year to become a rugby team. A friend of mine plays for the local LFL team. She definitely has a bangin body. She also never played sports on a college scholarship. Saying that Valkyrie is Viking is Football is ridiculous. Does that mean Concordia University would be justified if they changed their mascot to the Golden Gophers because that is synonymous with College sports in that region. Pick a different name LFL. I hope 1 of those "club rugby players" moonlights as an attorney. Good luck ladies!

how can you say they are "in general probably more committed to sport than club rugby players"? I certainly don't care what name this lfl team chooses to use, but in no way should judgement be passed on the rugby team. Open your eyes to the fact that this team is playing in the top level in the US.

First off, while the lingerie football league may be a bit exploitive, many of the women who compete in it are excellent athletes and in general probably more committed to sport than club rugby players. These are pro teams with a staff of coaches, professional strength coaches (I know one of them) and athletes selected from the ranks of top division 1 athletic programs. Besides, valkyrie-viking, football-football, it just goes together. Your best bet is to hope it draws some attention to the rugby club and maybe you could poach one of the players.

I find it hard to believe that the people of Minnesota who actually voted for the team name went out of there way to use the same name as the women's rugby club. I'm willing to bet most of the voters have no idea what rugby is, much less that there was a women's club with the same name in Minnesota. Just because you juxtapose the two instances of the same name does not mean one was create in spite of the other one. Just food for thought.
