@2010CRC: Mauer was the MVP of the entire tournament having scored 11 tries, almost more than double what anyone else did. Do you think the coaches would have selected him for that if he didn't perform? From what I've been seeing and reading, I can see Rocco becoming a star player for USA in the future.

[quote name="mjwathen"]Mom, "Life will be in CRC this year, but let's be real... there aren't too many teams that are exceptional rugby schools that aren't getting a chance to play in the CRC." Do you watch rugby at all? Four of the top five teams from national werent invited. Central Washington, Arkansas State, Kutztown, and St Mary's are all better then the majority of the teams invited to CRC. All of these schools have exceptional rugby programs, and deserve a shot at CRCs.

@ 2010CRC from the footage I watched which was against Utah (winners of tourney) Rocco had 1 try, should of had 2 more, just barely stepped on the line on 1 which would of been a 70 meter try, had a knock on in the try zone (Pati made a lucky play)and had a great chase down on defense for a try saving tackle. maybe you should go to hulu and watch the game to refresh your memory. BTW the kids lateral speed is great also.

....not to mention the recent Life vs. Utah match in Las Vegas, where Life won an exciting championship before approx. 30,000 butts in the seats! Too bad NBC Sports (aka Versus)elected not to show THAT match live at 7:00 PM, instead of a replay of the USA Team losing to Argentina, that was already shown live earlier in the afternoon on NBC....it would have been great promotion for NBC, since they televise the CRC in June!

the scenario you paint sounds intriguing, where a small school upsets a large school. the risk you then allow is that two small schools face one another. most people don't want to watch two small schools play a sport they don't quite understand.

@patrickclifton As one of the players from the first CRC if you look back to Mauer during the tournament his performance was a little above average at best. Let me note I'm not saying anything about how good he is now, its been 2 years and he may very well have improved much since then. The teams Bowling Green played in that tournament were some of the worst there. Also playing for the 9th place championship added 2 more games then some teams got. Very fast, but can't move laterally and was pretty weak on defense then.

I have no doubt that Life will sell the most tickets. When the only sport your school offers is rugby (I don't count NAIA basketball), that's the only chance you have to support your school at an athletic event. University of Texas diehards have dozens of high profile events they can go to each year to support their school. From a butts in seats perspective, Life is great or the CRC. Kutztown would have been too. From the perspective of an average sports fan flipping through the channels on Saturday June 2 and landing on NBC, Texas v Oklahoma is the much bigger draw and more likely to keep that fan's attention. I've watched the hockey final four when it was BC vs Michigan. I did not watch it when it was Bemidji State.

@Mjwathen...we all get why little good schools supposedly don't work on TV, but if March Madness tells us anything, people love an underdog. Even if in reality these no-name schools are better rugby programs, the casual observer will see big school getting upset by the little guy. On a side note, what is the deal with the "high school challenge?"

It really is a shame that Utah isn't included this year. They're more deserving than a lot of these teams and I feel like now that they're a Pac-12 school even add the name brand thing these CRC people want. What's the rationale behind them not being included? In my mind they're the best college 7's team in the nation.
