I'll type slower this time, Jacobb: Mike Tolkin has won three (3) Rugby Super League titles. Those are M-E-N, Jacobb. Mike has coached the Eagles D for three (3) years. Those are nominally the best American M-E-N playing the game today, Jacobb. Rugby experts say that the Eagles D-- except for the Australian surrender-- was a highlight of the Rugby World Cup. Just curious, Jacobb-- what are YOUR rugby credentials-- as a player and as a coach? (Maybe you could share with us how YOU would have defeated the Irish.)And don't be afraid to use your real name, Jacobb. We're all friends here.

Thank you for describing his HIGH SCHOOL coaching job, and also I suggest you rewatch the Ireland game. If we would have played decent defense we could have capitalized on Ireland's errors. However, I'm sure you are correct, the scheme works great at the high school level, maybe one day it will work with professional athletes on the Highest level of rugby.

All great news one more job staying in the US plus he can't do any worse than everyone else. Our improvement as a country has more to do with the growth of our youth programs rather than whose coaching the Eagles. Now let's get going and hire that Fijian for the US 7s head coaching position

Speaking of rereading the article, I should have reread my comment before I posted. I meant to say that Xavier demands ACADEMIC excellence of all its students, athletes included. Xavier is a Jesuit preparatory school. Each year there are at least 10 applicants for every spot in the freshman class, and 100% of its seniors go on to college. If a player's grades fall below what is expected, that player is suspended from practice and games until he rectifies the situation. No exceptions. Those rigorous academic standards, plus the lack of outdoor athletic facilties, which requires Xavier's 4 rugby teams (130 players and 16 coaches)to train at various fields from Pier 40 on the Hudson to Red Hook in Brooklyn, plus daily commutes for many students that can be as long as three hours round trip every day, mean that Mike Tolkin has never enjoyed the large pool of big, fast athletes that other schools do. What our kids are is tough and committed-- like their coach.

There's a whole lot of heat in these comments here, but lets try and stick to some important facts. In 25 years as a HS coach at Xavier, Tolkin has kept them as a top 10 national program (minimum) nearly every single one of those years. This is at a school that rarely wins regional or state titles at any other sport. Xavier never has top-tier athletes relative to other schools. Through his experience at Xavier and NY Athletic Club, he is as well known and admired by premier youth and Div. I coaches across the nation as anyone. I don't doubt there are a few others who were worthy of consideration for this position...but I'm not hearing such comments from those who run any of the top programs across the USA, or abroad.

Reread the article is right, Jacobb. (Holy crap.) Aside from captaining Xavier High School to its first national championship (made the winning kick)and coaching it to 3 more, Mike Tolkin built New York Athletic Club into a national power, winning 3 Rugby Super League titles, the third coming just a week after he coached Xavier to a national title for the 3rd time. AND he coached the USA U19 backs for years. AND he was defensive coach for the EAGLES for three years, putting together a rock solid defense for the World Cup last fall. And by the way-- Xavier High School has NO athletic fields of its own. NONE. In fact, Xavier has no outdoor campus at all. It's a building on 16th Street in Manhattan. AND it demands athletic excellence of all its students, jocks included. No exceptions. AND Mike Tolkin became Xavier head coach at age 19. Repeat, age 19. Don't worry, pal-- you'll get your CIPP's worth-- and then some.

I have had a chance to play alongside Mike and revel in the success he has had as a coach in the super league. this is an excellent choice. Mike has a passion for the game that few can really recognize. Kudos to USA rugby for making this decision. We finally have someone to recognize and matriculate all the talent this country possess.

@ jacobb, I am just going to ignore the fact that you think that referring to Mr. Tolkin as a high school coach is an apt description, reread the article buddy. Although Mr. Tolkin has won multiple national championships with Xavier you are severely understating is credentials. Not that I would ever think that Tolkin would ever take issue with being called a High School Coach because he is committed to promoting the youth game and teaching teenagers the game of rugby. I for one am very excited for my CIPP dues to be going to an American like Mr. Tolkin. Someone who will spend his time away from national team camps evaluating and focusing on US players not off living in what ever country he was hired from. Coach Tolkin has years of experience coaching the best players playing in the USA, not only on his own team but against them. Furthermore he is a man committed to expanding his knowledge of the game and making himself a better coach. This is a great hire.
