[quote name="BYU Rugby Forever"]Still scratching my head on this one ... and to think I just recently wrote a blog post highlighting Cal as the college rugby standard and hence BYU's #1 rival: http://byurugbyforever.blogspot.com/2011/12/know-thy-enemy-know-thyself.html Whoops! I guess BYU can look forward to racking up a few National Championships in the near future while Cal can't ... and will Cal play BYU again at all in-season or what's going to happen to the nation's most competitive matchup? Kiss your own a little more for the rest of us. Cal winning the division "below" will have everyone feeling the premier div is bogus. But keep tooting your own some more bud.

My last post had this sentence in the last paragraph: "Clark's first priority has what's best for Cal." It should have read "Clark's first priority has GOT TO BE what's best for Cal." Didn't want anyone who bothers to read my malarkey thinking the missing words might be "HAS ALWAYS BEEN", which would have given the sentence a different meaning entirely.

The only problem I have with Jack Clark is his reluctance to schedule opponents outside U.S. collegiate rugby, which Cal totally dominates. Even the annual Cal-UBC series has become pretty much suspense-free. Cal Rugby has done everything right and Clark owes no one an apology for the singular position his program occupies in America's rugby landscape. My own opinion of the CPD was always that it was an exciting concept that was neither commmercially nor financially viable and perhaps never would be. If Clark was smart enough to use it as a vehicle with which to convince the PAC and its TV network that rugby could be a legit sport at the gate and on TV- and the CPD Championship Game certainly seemed to prove that- more power to him. Clark's first priority has what's best for Cal. He may well be a disingenuous self-promoter, but he is also showing U.S. rugby the way to the next level. Ignore him at your peril.

Jack has always been honest and clear in his goals with rugby. It has always been about Jack, will always be about Jack and there is jack you can do about it. Keep his program out in the cold and let it shrivel up and die, Rugby would be the better for it. He has breed a culture of elitism, that makes the skull and bones look like a collection of the 99%. DO not let them in any usa rugby division and place penalties on any one who plays them. Jack retire ,and for all his acolytes out there, you do not know jack. Jack you are not the 99% and you are like me , just a coach no more no less

I don't get it, especially considering the comment about the majority of Cal players NOT playing after college at a higher level. Wouldn't you then want to contend for the highest-level-collegiate title instead of something less than that if you’ve got nothing to gain in rugby after school??? Weird ... I suppose BYU will accept this very uncharacteristi c ‘freebie’ from Cal … perhaps :/

changing your mind happens all the time with USA RUGBY - hiring or firing of coaches and admins - locations, times of events. They change thier mind on High performace, grass roots, high school.. so jack clark changed his mind...good for him. wtf...why are you complaining about this..

mcfaddeninsuran ce, I don't entirely disagree but place yourself in their shoes. You have to recognize that most collegiate rugby players won't go on to play rugby at a higher level. In Cal's case, I bet nearly 3/4 of the team don't even play rugby at all post-college, let alone at a higher level. Not to mention that nearly all of these kids aren't on a rugby scholarship. Given this, and the fact that Clark guarantees his recruits admission to a great university, it's hard to pass up what Cal offers, especially from a non-rugby standpoint. CPD or not, these kids might still pick Cal.

I recently read about the high school athletes who have committed to come to Cal next year. There are a couple dozen universities that take rugby very seriously and are making the commitment to play against the best. Those recruits should reconsider their decision if they want to face the best competition and become part of a D1-A program.

Wow! This is a stunningly clear example of Cal and JC simply doing whatever they feel like doing, and expecting once again that they are the dominant tail that can, and probably will, wag the dog. Utter, utter BS, considering that (as others already mentioned) JC was the main force behind the formation of the CPD.

Well I wonder how fast the "D-1AA" designation/name/ will be switched to accommodate the new reality. I seem to recall a Cal led stink some years ago about the D II champion calling themselves the "National Collegiate Champion" all because they did not include the D II designation. Anybody see a Cal player wearing a "D1-AA Nat Champion" shirt in the future? And by the way - the Midwest & NE US teams fought a long hard battle to get playoff rounds moved to late April & mid-May. If Cal wants to join our party - this time they are going to play by our rules.
