A lot of these teams are wasting money they could use to host good local 7's tournaments. That would make more sense to turn their local population toward rugby 7's instead of going to Las Vegas to get drunk and destroyed by the big boys.

Am I the only one who finds it strange that while LV is hosting this thing, UNLV, a decent sized Div1 school hasn`t entered. Infact I don`t think there are any local teams in any of the LVI divisions which is pretty sad! You would`ve thought with a big event on your doorstep that might motivate the UNLV rugby team to get it`s act together and put at least a decent 7s programme in place.

As nice as it is to say we should always play our hardest, I find people who say they do disingenuous. I went to Nationals with 3 different clubs, and each one of them lost interest to a degree after being eliminated from the top spot. So much effort goes into just getting there, there's an inevitable let-down when the ultimate goal is lost. There are teams that forfeit matches rather than play in meaningless games (which I disagree with), and many don't field their best side- they clear their bench. The point is, it's very natural to put forth a lesser effort in these games- I'm always going to take the results with a grain of salt. There is no bronze medal in rugby. Yet.

I want to be very clear that my take on how the game went down is based solely on the fact that Kutztown is much better than a 27 point loss to anyone, coupled with my own experience playing in high stakes games. It in no way indicates any direct knowledge of how the boys felt. There is no ASU/Kutztown dispute that I'm aware of, certainly not on my part. ASU is a top flight program, and they played excellent rugby Friday and Saturday. It would have surprised no one to see them walk away with the championship, it just didn't quite work out for them this time.

Again, none of this has any relevance to the actual Kutztown game because I have no knowledge whatsoever of their mindset during the consolation game. This is just my view on consolation games in general. You play them out, and there is no saying "we're a better team but we just weren't trying." The writing is on the pitch.

It's all an individual thing, however you choose to look at it. But I look at it as another opportunity to measure yourself against a worthy opponent and see how you have improved or how you can improve further. It has nothing to do with whatever difference there may or may not be between 3rd and 4th. It's about why you play the game. If you can't muster up the motivation to leave it all on the field in a consolation match, I won't consider you a better team than a team that shows up an does that, regardless of how you would have played if it were a championship.

I won't pretend to know anything about this ASU-Kutztown dispute, but with respect to this comment, I think good teams play to win no matter what the "prize" is. No one knows what players were thinking but themselves, but if what you're implying was true, we can't turn a blind eye to a performance because the team may have been disinterested. Part of being a great team is playing to win every time you step on the field I am one of the most competitive people you ever meet, however the idea of playing in a 3rd/4th place match is sickening to me. Matches like this are for little league tournaments not for rugby nationals. There is no difference between 3rd and 4th. In my eyes they are both less then what you came for. These kind of matches in a contact sport like rugby are ridiculous and dangerous.

they traveled to Texas to be #1, not #3, and they fell short. Is the prize for finishing 3rd that much greater than the one for finishing 4th? Go ask someone who's actually won something in their life and get back to me. As someone who has won a lot in their life (and under the assumption KU hasnt) I would say there is a massive difference in finishing 3 or 4. Everyone travel to be #1, but if you are lucky to be in the consolation game a bronze medal always looks better than a "thanks for coming" ribbon. As an outsider to the situation I feel the hatred for KU is coming from the comments made by fans. Reminds me of A certain PA mens team. Reminding the world that KU has no heart for the game (even though you say you dont know about the boys) is not the way to win over anyone. You could try winning, but if that doesnt work being a nice person normally helps in the rugby community
