From having watched and played in Haylee Slaughter games, Grant Cole- you sound like Haylee propping herself up on here. Brilliantly fast? You must be an avid cricket supporter, b/c she is dangerously slow. Like how I used excessive vocabulary to express my unwanted opinion?

You're right, most of the refs there were excellent! And there was a LOT of pressure on all of them as there were three Referee Evaluators watching and coaching them. Brighton Khumalo was an outstanding ref, but he didn't seem to get as many matches as some others. Haylee Slaughter was brilliantly fast, often anticipating direction of play accurately and choosing a line to keep on top of it. Both communicated with the players to maintain flow to their matches. Hopefully, these two will be at LVI and get more matches. Maybe the inconsistent, pedantic ones won't get an invite!

I was there for this tournament, and witnessed the refereeing first hand. In my opinion, some of the refs there were the most inconsistent referee's I have ever seen. At times, it almost looked as if they were trying to throw games. Im sure theres a million reasons why some teams got certain calls, and others none for the same incident. However, with that said, some of the referees were world class and got close to every call right! As a fan and player of the sport, all I ask is to let the men/women play. Dont go out there trying to prove anything ... After all you're just an official, not a player trying to lay it all on the line for a National Title.

Just as an fyi, refs at national events are not paid. They are reimbursed for travel. So, by definition, they're not "volunteers" to the level described earlier, but they're still giving up an entire weekend to be there. The refs chosen for this weekend were not there simply because someone wanted to "test" them. They'd earned those assignments. The fact that the time issue wasn't handled appropriately was unfortunate. I think, however, if you ask any evaluator or referee coach, the level of play were not beyond any of the referees there, including the one who had the watch gaffe.

[quote name="Kris Kringle"]@Ref @ midwest college fan Referees are all volunteers too and I'm pretty sure all the coaches in any certain area can tell you which referees we do not like. Here is the thing I am a VOLUNTEER as in I do not get paid anything, I pay to travel with the team, hotel, gas airfare, whatever it takes. That is a VOLUNTEER. A ref is no longer a VOLUNTEER if they are getting paid. I apologized in this instance if all of the refs at this event paid there own way and did not get paid for games. Volunteer refs are the good guys that give you pack what you pay them at the end of a fun social tounament as a donation, that is a volunteer. With paying refs there is an expectation of getting a quality service for your money so as a paying customer I have a right to question and ask about what has happened in this instance.

Hey Poe Ditch, maybe you should ask why a for profit company is using non-varsity status, and non-NCAA student athletes for a "for profit venture" and then they turn around and allow these amateur college teams to cough up their own hard earned cash to travel and compete? seems like a lose-lose proposition for the college players. Nice job USArugby, way to sell out the membership...AGAIN

SMC played very well, but were not treated poorly. They suffered too many key injuries (and they knew that had happened). They displayed the most team-oriented performance on Friday, but Saturday's QF match saw two of their key 7s players injured. To their credit, they did go home with hardware.

@Invitational You sound sexist and ignorant. The fact that she's female is irrelevant; it's not as if she missed a try because she couldn't keep up. Maybe you haven't heard of Dana Teagarden, a woman on USA Rugby's National Panel, and she's done international men's 7's matches quite well. There were two other female referees at the tournament who handled men's matches just fine. @Poe Ditch Officer I agree with you completely. @Ref If you're going to reveal her name, you should be man enough to reveal yours.
