Hey,I am a senior in high school and I have only been playing since my freshman yr.I go to a small boarding school of only 60 boys and rugby means the world to everybody there. We havent had any rich history, but we have been ranked in the top 20 multiple times.my freshman yr and last yr we made it to the regional tournament losing to gonzaga both times. This yr we have the best team since i've been at this school but now we are getting jipped at our chance at nationals.Gonzaga recognized us as having the best back-line they had faced all yr and playing with more heart than any other team.Even being recognized as the dominant powerhouse of the EPRU I doubt we have enough rep to make nationals which has been everybodys dream since I was a freshman. I only wish everybody had a fair chance at making nationals it only seems fair that you make the tournament based on how well you play during THIS year.In any sport when does it matter whether you have a good history to make the championship?

The competition in the U19 division has gotten better because of the National tournament.. Teams play their home town, or instate rivals and may do great, but when they come to nationals, IT gives them a true measurement of where they sit against the other top teams in the country. When you dumb down the competition, or take it away, its going to slow the progress of teams getting better. TELL me that when guys come to nationals and play the likes of Highland and United if it hasent made their team better in the proccess by playing these types of programs? I believe it does. I believe that Highland ( AND IM NOT AFFILIATED WITH THEM AT ALL ) has UPPED the bar for all HS age rugby programs, wether or not WE like them, or not !

How are you giving incognito the thumbs down. I agree when the USA youth rugby pres is telling the Utah sbro Pres that nationals is not for the Best teams from their state. I think that tells us all what thee true feeling of USA youth rugby is. They are fully killing the competition nationally. I think it sucks

From: Kurt Weaver [mailto:kweaver @usarugby.org] Sent: Saturday, December 17, 2011 5:49 PM Subject: Re: [Sbo-youth] HS Nationals Mike, This is not meant to be the best of your state. It is meant to only be for teams that know they can compete at the national level and have the interest in making the commitment. They have to prove they deserve to be there through the application process. Thanks Kurt THIS IS the email sent to our SBRO pres.. pretty pathetic.. they are not even trying to bring the best teams from each state .. THEY are truly killing the Spirt of Competition that has been so strong with the Rugby in the U19 and HS NATIONALLY for the past many years.. i think its sad

Comments like this are why I largely ignore this section of the website. There's a huge difference between a deposit and a fee, you schmuck. Also, the system is pretty broken for most teams, as they can't afford to attend it last-minute, and the spring is full of items in a high schooler's schedule, such as the state tournament, the league season, finals, prom, easter, etc. that make HS scheduling difficult.

Re: to Interesting - i think you miss the point. i will go out on a limb - the vast majority of HS teams are not part of (1) any state sport sanctioning body or (2) officially recognized by their HS as a varsity sport. the system was not broke and by making it an invite only and charging $50 to apply and $1500 to attend, well call I can say is that there are no tournaments in this country that charge that much even for men's teams. i for one hope the state level play leads to formal recognition of rugby and gets USArugby out of the way
