i agree.. When you take out qualifying by what you can accomplish on the field.. then it takes away the spirit of true competition.. SOON as you put things in a committee, or an invitational.. people will start pushing their own agenda, and will push for teams from their area or with whom they are affiliated. YOU May not agree with me now.. but i promise when it comes down to the decision each year they do this.. SOME ONE will not be happy somewhere about the results of who is picked !!! Because basically an invitational is based on peoples OPINION of who should be there. I coached U19 in utah for many years, and With how much Rugby in the USA has grown on the Youth level in the past 6 yrs.. < i think its So sad to change everything now when it has gained so much momentum. U19 now gone, Nationals by invitation,.. what else are we going to change?

Other high school sports are now heading the national championship direction .... nationals for cross country was just held last weekend. It's such a valuable experience, some other mainstream h.s. sports are headed this direction now. I'm cautiously optimistic, since they've assembled an impressive group of high school coaches who have dedicated their lives to this level. A major concern has to be how to fairly take into account up-and-coming programs. Taking away regional qualifiers takes away the opportunity to prove it on the field instead of on paper. If it's the same old boys or girls teams every year, what’s the point? It won't have the same effect on growing the game that an event with a true opportunity for all to challenge for would encourage.

THE Only sport in the USA for HS.. which HAD a true national playoff and championship was Rugby.. , that is what set it apart and made it so special. Winning a state title is cool.. but winning a national Title is once in a life time.. I played in two when i was in HS back in 90-91.. and coached in 6 < and the experience our boys have had is un-matched and some of the best rugby memories they will ever have.. YOU cant get taht at your SBRO championship.. and like these other guys said, there is NO reason that the sbro`s cant do it on another weekend.. < and if I had a chance to take my club to Nationals, or stay home and compete for the state title in our SBRO.. where do you think WE would go? HAHA.. its a no brainer.. Bring back how nationals have always been.. DONT try and fix something that Was NOT BROKEN

@blood in the water: I agree that the SBROs are more important than the Nationals and I look forward to the day when there are so many teams competing in my state (New York) that the Nationals become meaningless & gratuitous. But having coached high school rugby & created schedules for 19 years, there's no way you can tell me that there's no room in a season to carve out one weekend for a territorial tournament that sends teams to a National Tournament. And I do believe that a National tournament can drive the quality of play (and the skill development of players) by forcing elite teams to get better to make the Nationals. It doesn't affect just the eight teams that make it; it affects the dozens of others that strive to make it. More than that, ask any player or coach who has participated in the tournament, and they will tell you that it is a pinnacle experience in their sporting life. It would be a shame to take that experience away from a few hunderd kids every year.

The national championship tournament was only one weekend long. It is laughable that SBRO's wouldn't be able to schedule their season with an open weekend for nationals and an open weekend for their territorial tournament for any teams that would potentially compete in one or both of the tournaments. Just takes a little planning... Our state did that last year, and had 2 teams travel to SLC, travel back and continue in their state tournament. How hard is that? Am I missing something? I also agree that a questionnaire is just not good enough for a method of selecting teams for something of this magnitude. A team could have an outstanding, national championship caliber season, and not have even had a shot at it before the season even started...

Screw the SBRO's. What makes rugby so unique is that it is about the only HS age sport in the US that has a National Champion and Tournament. Why lessen a teams National accomplishments because certain ones are unable to compete. But for those who do wish to compete for a National Championship it is such a great motivating tool and the only way to measure who the best teams in the US are. State Championships should always take a second seat to Nationals. It would be like the NCAA putting greater importance on Conference Championships than a National Championship. USARugby has this totally wrong.

Nationals should be scrapped and the focus should be on SBROs. I know it is important for a few elite clubs like Jesuit, Xavier, Gonzaga, Highland, United, etc, but in fact it does interfere with the SBRO championships and that interference is hurting rugby's growth. The actual dates of the championships may not conflict, but that is just the championship. You are forgetting that many teams were faced with 2 different playoff routes, one to the state championship and one through their TU and to nationals.

Tahi, There was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Some folks on the high school committee claimed that it got in the way of SBRO championships and forced the SBROs to shorten their seasons to make way for the Nationals. Reality is that virtually all the SBRO Championships happen after the Nationals (except for some states in the warm climates who finish their whole season before the Nationals). The committee wanted to scrap the whole Nationals. The best we could get was an invitational. Hopefully teams will demand going back to a play-in system the way it had been for the past 20+ years.
