Anyone making posts here that actually coached rugby besides the one guy who actually say the USA Train? The next stage will be telling. Three tournaments over with. Two month break. Addition of players who were hurt and/or had other commitments. Then USA 7s. Some players added, some subtracted I'd guess. Let's see if we have progress & total commitment & heart from our USA 7s Team on home soil. That's what I'm waiting for.

I had the privilege of attending the Eagles 7's training in Port Elizabeth at the sports fields where I am currently coaching and watched all their matches at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. As a coach myself for 25 years, I observed that at training, the Eagles team looked very sharp and impressive, running lines and excellent support play - they are fit, skilled and great athletes but may lack some aggression. The American Nation can be PROUD of their performance at the HSBC 7's Tournament. The coach cannot be blamed for the missed tackles and minor errors that take place on the field. I believe this was the Eagles best performance so far. Unfortunately USA was drawn into a tough pool of long standing rugby countries to play up against and they stood up to their opposition very well with some close scores which could have gone either way. The Coach is professional and disciplined and I rate him highly. The Eagles team are fantastic Ambassadors for your country on and off the field!

Lets be real! the problem is the coach and the players he picks. Scully missing he made an impact at PANAMs helping them win against who??? They won Bronze losing to Canada. Coaches selection is poor! Bok really!! he wouldn't even start let alone be on the squad for teams we are trying to beat. How bout lets pick people who can actually pass of both hands. Heres a quote for you "LETS PICK PEOPLE WHO CAN ACTUALLY GET THE JOB DONE OR SHOULD WE JUST KEEP GIVING THIS COACH AND HIS BOYS CHANCES WASTING MONEY AND LOSING TRACTION ON TRYING TO GROW THE GAME IN THIS COUNTRY."

I sometimes wish we could develop an American style of rugby play. We have some of the best athletes in the world and we should take advantage of that. Gets some guys out there that tackle like animals and some guys that are just faster than everyone else. Yes obviously they need to be intelligent rugby players but we don't have to emulate the southern hemisphere to have that. Were the country known for gridiron football...let's get that mentality going. I believe there's a lot that could be shared between the games. We should instill fear when we play other countries. The crazy part is that we have some those players but they aren't playing right now. Let's put on a show that'll be entertaining for the crows and terrifying for opponents.

Good article. I love Coach Al personally but he needs to select a couple of guys who can break a tackle, keep their feet in contact and I know it sounds ignorant but honestly speaking, "knock the crap out of an opponent" every now and then. If we aren't giving residency to at least 3 more potential Emerick style players (throw away your bleep tests and look at their hearts), tackle breakers/aggressive defenders; we've lost the plot. If we don't have those guys ID'ed yet, leave space for them. What's the point of giving a contract to a guy who can't stop a Kiwi, Fijian or Samoan player one on one...that guy isn't going to be on our Olympic Team (or he sure as hell shouldn't be).

Hoping residency will show some marked improvements. At times, it seemed like the three-leg tour was helping us get more consistent in spending more time together as a team. At other times, we looked like the same old Eagles--the potential is there, but failed to execute on the basics....restart errors, lack of support running, etc. Hoping for better in 2012, GO EAGLES!

Mike Mid West"] not sure which friends of yours are eagles but I can tell you from my personal experience that the entire 7s camp is skilled based. The only fitness we do is with ball in hand. Caravelli is a good coach. The best I've had. We need to accept responsibility for our missed tackles. We aren't coached to go high. If your friends feel there is no bonding that is why they are not on the team. We just spent 4 weeks together have grown with each other. As you said we have athletes we need better rugby players.

You can look at the standings and feel good that the USA is in 11th place out of 21 teams, but if you look closely only 12 of those teams have participated in all three stops of the tour. Personally, I think the USA is capable of better than 11th out of 12. Perhaps, if there isn't serious improvement during the series, a coaching change will be in order.

It's not the coach's fault. My husband played for Al and he said that the players need to take responsibility of their actions. He also said they pretty much cover everything at camp and that its not only about fitness. Coach has done his job its the players that need to do theirs during the game.

Its crazy to say this...these mistakes are because the players although good...DONT GET BETTER...a friend of mine has been with the Eagles...and his skills have got worth....just recently he admitted that skills is not the focus poitn but rather fitness...ALL THE TIME....nothing has changed under Caravelli...yes we look good...but we have athletes...many times foriegners come here and are impressed with our level of sevens.....there are no excuses...USA players are exposed to sevens more than nearly any nation...so basic mistakes is not a excuse....players need to start speaking up and be honest with what they experience while playing for the USA....and truth be told 3 players I know ( have to keep their names silent for their sake) have expressed that while international teams can bond and have fun...the USA dont....forward passes..kick directly into touch....no sweeper at times...not recognizing overlaps....turn overs...tackling high....all no excuse
