The US 7's team is sort of caught between a rock and a hard place. The better they do, the more exposure the players get which inevitably leads to contracts for some of these guys or the 15's team poaching all of them. Swiryn, Wyles, Ngwenya, etc. all examples of this. Not to mention some of the injuries that come from these guys playing too much rugby (Scully, Mile Pulu, Emerick). I hate to say this tour is going to be a rebuilding phase, but I just don't think there's enough talent on this roster for us to compete at the moment.

How much better would Wyles, Emerick, & Swiryn have played together with more time together? Would Thretton have bolted for the gridiron if he had a chance to make it in the game he loved and was great at playing? Sure these are counter-factuals, but the questions remain. And the 7s residency programs of RSA & NZ are showing results in consistency over time. Residency may not be the end-all-be-all answer, but it will have a serious impact.

See they don't need residency to play like they know each other...they just need to play better...right now...and they did that v Zim...and need to keep doing it against EVERYONE...that same Zim team is beating Samoa right now!!!

But we were playing much better a couple of years ago...you don't need to live together to pass good ball to your team mate...I've shown up jet lagged in HK and managed better team chemistry...I wouldn't call the way they played in PanAm or these two stops "a style of play" and clearly they had at least that a couple of years ago...Swiryn and Emerick and Wyles added to this crew would bring them up to some standard...I really don't want to go through this whole IRB series having the hear crap about how these guys will play better after residency...you can tackle or you can't; you can give you team mates good ball or you can't; drawing defenders and springing a team mate for a run is Rugby 101; not something you need to live together to sort out. They had Emerick, Peters, Thretton and a speedy wing coming off the bench a couple of seasons ago...clearly they have not improved personnel. Let's have a great Day2 in Dubai Eagles!!!

the truth is they have had less time together each year. The coach is the right one. He never is able to keep the same guys from tournament to tournament, ideal would be year to year. Other teams are spending more than us we are in catch up.

We will probably NOT see the results we want/expect until the residency program is in full swing and a "core" of players begins to play as one and can easily get another 4-6 reservists to step-up to their level of play. Residency will improve fitness and communication with some semblance of immediacy. After that foundation is built, the remaining issues fall in line with practice, practice, practice.

the story-line gets old...injuries, regulars, trying new combos, cross-over athletes...yada yada yada...same end result. is it the selections? fitness? injuries? what? dare we say...try a different coach? 4 years, different players, "better" athletes, more time to assemble the past 2 years and....same results....losing record.
