@foolustwice Given the current social climate of the United States, I can understand your frustration ... however, the blaring problem with any and all arguments against BYU is that they are the Best. Yes, Cal is the current dynasty, but who in the US Rugby community wants to be left with their regimented, uncreative, and unentertaining style of play as the standard for college rugby into the future? No ... that's a dead end. BYU brings the diversity, creativity, and dynamics like no one else ... and the results support this fact ... never mind a few close losses to the Golden Oldies! ;) BYU Rugby Forever!

I've read a lot of complaints regarding how the CRC 7's selects their teams, and a lot of positive feedback about the USA Rugby play-in format. It seemed the meat and potatoes of the arguments were that the CRC wasn't a true national champion because not the best teams were invited. Well now you have a tournament where the best teams are turning down their invitations. So another national tournament that people will complain isn't the real national champion. Great progress USA Rugby.

And this BYU team had a real shot at the national championship, too. It's not mentioned here, but the Air Force squad that they beat had come through their half of the draw undefeated with an average margin of 40 points or so and held several of their opponents scoreless. Air Force fully expected to win the tournament, since they had been focusing since August on 7s and were supremely fit, especially at altitude. In the final, Air Force was certainly the most fit team, since BYU had only been working out once a week for one hour playing mostly touch rugby. Even so, BYU's defense completely stymied the Zoomies, causing them to feel awfully frustrated at not being able to score in the 20-minute final. Meanwhile, superior athleticism and speed allowed BYU to put up try after try. I sure wish they had scheduled the finals one week later. BYU woulda been somethin to see.

Of course, the tournament -- like all other USA championships -- was set up as a Fri-Sat event specifically to appease the Mormons, causing all the other schools to miss additional school days during their finals, and guaranteeing that the Friday matches will be played to empty stands. When will USARFU quit bowing-and-scraping to one constituency?
