I am not sure how it is considered wrong if a 25 year old undergraduate student is playing varsity rugby. If they enroll into college later than the traditional college student, why would USA rugby deprive them of their right to play rugby? I think this is something that could be debated on for years, but I would not say that is cheating. You hear of stories like this all the time when an older male or female makes a varsity NCAA team. I did look into this though and I was told by a reputable source that every player on the team is a full time undergraduate/graduate student at the university, verified by their registrar.

AIC clearly going for the BYU model of getting older players to compete against young adults. One of those loop holes USA Rugby needs to evaluate and reform if they want to be taken serious. Why would a blue chip 18 yr old athlete want to compete against 25 yr old men. Also, how does a school with professional staff and support let that many starters essentially not register with USA Rugby. We could debate the news or usefulness of CIPP but for now it's just something that needs to be done - seems like AIC is far from "varsity"

AIC was sanctioned for the following reasons; 1. They recieved 2 yellows during their 5th conf game, neither of whom were CIPP'd. Upon further review, a total of 12 players had been playing all season without being CIPP'd, many were starters/returning players. 2. After the 4th conf game, 5 waivers were submitted for players past their 5 yrs of college eligibility. All 5 players are AIC students. 3 of the waivers were approved fairly quickly by USAR, 1 was approved later on, and 1 has still not been approved. AIC appealed to USA Rugby who ruled unanimously against them. This had nothing to do with age.

Can someone please explain what happened to AIC? Inquiring minds want to know. Were there players simply not cipp'ed? Or were they too old, not college students, etc. For a school with university backing and a "varsity" model it is really silly and embarrassing. Were they trying to cheat or just an oversight? ERUGBYNEWS should do a story

There should be no mention of AIC, they barely beat Bentley with a homer referee, 12 guys not cipped, and 4 guys who were over 25 years old that were illegally playing (because of age and cipp). USA rugby actually somehow started granting eligibility to 3 ofthe 4 toward the end of the season, although these 4 had been playing without waiver all year. We all know an 18 year old vs a 25+ yer old is not the match up we want, hence why the rule is in place. No more waivers!!
