@ Good Luck Agree to disagree. I know plenty of very "serious" former college players who went on to be All-Americans who would not have left their internships/jobs a month early (for both personal choices & financial reasons). I'm not against a unified fall season, I just see some major flaws in the overly simplified "just have everybody play in fall" East Coast stance. With that said, if 7s becomes a major part of college rugby (which it looks to be), then it needs to be played in the late spring; good weather, more TV marketability, and availability of football crossover athletes (7s is obviously more attractive and easier to pick up for those athletes.

Qouting Aaron L: "The reason you play so many 15's matches is so you can develop players." That is true, but you dont need a national championship to developo players either. Were talking about a unified calendar for teams that want to compete for a national championship. I dont think anyone is suggesting not playing as much rugby as possible, just standardizing the seasons to allow all teams the chance to be at top form for chaampionships.

@binky, ussb started classes 9-18, ucsd started 9-19. Berkeley starts class in August. Princeton started classes on 9-15. If Princeton can play in the fall so can the cal schools. Serious rugby players will show up to play. Other players will start when school starts. And Freshmen can go to pre-season training.

The reason you play so many 15's matches is so you can develop players. You can't develop players playing only 8-12 matches a year. It will take forever. Frankly, collegiate 7's is going to be very difficult to regulate due to the differing season, weather, etc. Teams are going to have to choose to play either 7's, 15's, or both. Look at the international circuit, a great many players are 7's specialists. That means they ply their trade only for 7's. There is far too much emphasis being placed on 7's. It needs to be a marketing tool for 15's....

Right. The problem isn't actually finals so much (CRC is spring term finals). The problem is that it's totally outside the academic calendar. That's a no-no.

@ The UC system out here in California starts in mid to late September (I believe 9/22 this year). Cal Poly and a couple other high quality Cal State schools are also on the quarter system. These teams would lose a number of established players who would not leave summer internships a month early, cannot afford to lose a month of summer salary (or pay an extra month rent at school), and any freshmen who are not even part of the school until the first day of classes. I would love to see all regions playing at the same time, but unless strict rules are in place stating no team can start formal training until all schools are in session, IMO, a Fall season is not the fair answer.

I know that the USOC want a National College 7s series, but I really don't like the idea. Instead build a short 7s season around the CRC in June/July. After that start the Club 7s season and hopefully Grand Prix Rugby season. If the college kids choose they can take part in these competitions. The USA 7s team can be choosen from the CRC and Grand Prix.

OK, so both USAR and USA 7s format for the upcoming tournaments leave something to be desired. USAR, please announce your teams now, learn from the mistakes and move on. USA 7s, if you want an "invitational", then have it and live with the consequences. Twelve play-in tournaments could handle the interested teams and the top two from each could be invited. Twenty-four teams and away you go. Too late to change for now, but make it right in the future.

Let the conferences run themselves - they seem to have been it okay without the interference of TUs and LAUs so far and the only issues are where USAR is supposed to be organizing something like CPD!
