Yes I was fortunate to attend the tournament for both days. I came as a Cal supporter (alumni class of '85). Here's the impression I had for both St marys and UCD: Saint Marys: They were a good team, all around strong with great speed on the outside. They were relentless in their tackling and poaching. The were a much more polished team then SDSU. There winger was lights out. UC Davis: Davis in my opinion was definitely the 2nd best team in the tournament. They had one slip up vs SDSU but other then that their game was perfect. They allowed the fewest points and forced the most out of all the teams. They were able to exploit mismatches, their center was unstoppable for most of the tournament. MY WHOLE REASONING FOR THIS IS TO THROW MY 2 CENTS INTO USA RUGBY AND LET THEM KNOW THE TOP 4 TEAMS FROM THIS TOURNEY WERE MORE THEN DESERVING OF A SPOT IN TEXAS.

re - How is a 28-7 loss to UC Davis on the first day dominant? well, i think i allowed for the davis turd in my orig post and gave credit where credit is due - davis was good for that 14 minutes. cal had the most dominant match i saw - 50 something to zip vs scuts but cal was the 5th best side on the wkend -- so much for match dominance. as for smc, they've played what 9 or 10 matches over two tourneys, lost the one match to Davis, won the rest, & taken the two tourneys they've taken part in. & outside of the Davis match, they looked dominant doing it - at least the tourney i saw, in moraga. they also play borderline reckless and with complete commitment to their style and that makes for a very potent 7s side. curious mr robles if you were at either tourney and whether you have a different impression based on what you saw vs. what you may have read? will be interesting to see what will happen when/if smc finally match up w/ byu in dec.

Scrappy little St. Mary's, out-smarted and out-played their bigger opposition (s) (by enrollment) this weekend to win the California Collegiate 7's Tournament. Nice to see David beating the Goliaths, again!

Has nothing to do that he doesn't have the speed. He just selected wrong and doesn't know how to coach 7s. If they did not have Scully this past CRC they would not have made it out of the pool. This year they won't.

Mr wash - i dunno, i thought smc looked pretty dominant sat&sun. & thats two 7s tourneys in the can for the Gaels. 1 letdown against a surprisingly tuff davis side. Otherwise i thought the only way they lose is if they beat themselves thru ill discipline & red cards. Even then twice ovr the wkend they played mandown 7s & still dominated. I thought they looked like a 7s side that had it all-speed / skill / strength / attitude. Nice to see a college side besides the west side goliath bring it like SMC did.

"what a wash" or should i say what a joke..how can you state no team proved to be the best when 8 teams had 2 day competition to determine such...it proved to be arguably the toughest college 7's qualifier to date with one team a clear winner…I agree that two or three of the top finishers are deserving of a at large bid for the national championship...for the record, cal finished 5th out of 8 teams, just the facts jack.

The reason Cal can not dominate in 7s is simple. A hand picked squad of 60+ players to win at 15s doesn't guarantee success in 7s. I expect that JC will be looking at some flat out speedsters currently playing HS rugby or track that he will get into Cal to bolster their 7s efforts. Then order will be restored. Plus after the varsity scare JC knows that if the can get a couple Cal grads into the Olympic side in 2016 his program will further entrench themselves in the Athletic Department.

Cal will continue to dominate in 15's but will definitely be challenged by teams like saint Mary's, Utah, byu, UBC.. They make playoffs but a championship Will only come from this years team forming its own identity, they can't fall back on what cal teams have done in the past. Leadership?
