Seems like Fox and every other foreign media market has figured out how to advertise not just with rugby but with soccer, aussie rules, league, etc. it can be done. its just a matter of do the tv stations want to do it. speaking of which, many cable channels do not run commercials either. nice to see a few others on the 15's bandwagon though too. 7's may introduce SOME players to rugby but it cannot develop a 15's a player especially at some key skill positions. entirely two different games.

Our u19 averages 250+ kids per year in our program. if it were not for our strong 15s base, many of those kids wouldnt get any playing time.. but when we run 9- 10 15s teams of various ages.. we do fine. ... So my point is.. where do you break down your time, and your season from 7s to 15?

Do you sacrifice the base that has been built in 15s to promote 7s? personally ive coached u19 for many years, and now university mens rugby. And to try and compete nationally in 15s, and build our program we cant run 7s at the same time.. I have nothing against sevens.. I actually know nothing about coaching it, and i rarely played it , but i love watching it... But personally, i wouldnt know where to manage my time in running programs in both if i were making a run at nationals

Sevens is fine and all, but considering at the moment our XVs national team's worst positions are fly half and the front row, sevens is almost the polar opposite to developing those positions. Compared to other positions we have a wealth of guys 11 thru 15, it's not like focusing on sevens then is going to improve the XVs team much. 7s will always have the advantage when it comes to TV just due to no commercial breaks in XVs rugby compared to 7s which has one every 8 minutes and the games are short. Since increasing TV coverage is going to drive the game's development here I don't know what could be done to help out XVs. Sure you'll get the national team's RWC and warmup games on a channel like Universal, but even for the college national final which is the most important XVs domestic game all year (sorry senior clubs and RSL), it was tape delayed and they only showed parts of the game.

Totally agree Alex - the problem is the season question - which is it to be? At a college, if you play Sevens at the start of the fall semester for 3-4 weeks leading to a conference tournament. You can use Sevens (as you correctly pointed out) to introduce rookies to the game.

If you want to see 15s on tv, you better start loving 7s. People will only watch on tv games/sports they're at least mildly familiar with - that's why crap like darts and bowling makes it, and rugby doesn't. I worked in a bar with multiple tvs once and put rugby on all the time - but people watched poker and darts instead. Know why? They understood those games. 7s is the gateway to understanding rugby, because more people will have access to learning the game from its easier ability to start-up.

The US can medal in Olympic rugby if we focus our resources on developing our domestic 7s talent -- particularly our women. Sadly, USAR's over commitment to men's 15s opens the door for 3rd tier rugby nations to surpass us.

I couldn't agree more. Just get the rugby ball into the hands of kids one way or another, then go from there. If sevens/olympic rugby makes the 'rugby wolrd' more accessible to kids, and does a better job of getting the community involved, then why not.

One big point is that its a lot more affordable running franchises where you only have to pay seven players (with a roster of 12) versus the 15 of union (roster of 30). Rugby League only needs 13 players. In my opinion, a compelling business case for a USA city based rugby competition would be a merger of rugby union 15s, rugby league, rugby tens (of which there are some tournaments) and rugby sevens into a 12 team member game format … like we used to play in primary school in South Africa. You’d still get two 40 minute halves and the field will be much less crowded as it was in particularly the France Wales semi-final where for long periods it was just pick up and go against a rugby league style defensive line stretched across the whole field. You’ll also have less neck injuries in scrums. It will also boost amateur sport as its always a pain to find 15 players – The newly merged sport would be called … wait for it … Rugby.
