Is this just "Sour Grapes" on USA Rugby's part because they missed out on the 7's championship? This is just so thrown together. The Midwest qualifier had only 4 teams. The championship has no home, sponsors or TV coverage. So, in mid-December, a champion will be crowned at 'Los Middle-of-Nowhere' Municipal Stadium and only the 12 people working the concession stands will know who it is. Plus, they talk about a merit based system, but there are still "at large" selections. So, the big teams won't even bother playing in, knowing they will get picked for the final field. Hence, maybe why some of the teams dropped out of the Midwest qualifier? Hmmm...

Why is it that New England and East coast school have qualifiers in the middle of November? Does anyone involved with USA Rugby realize how the seasons change. I realize that it has to be done afer the 15's season is over but there has to be better options.

I find it absolutely unreasonable that USA Rugby is continuing to discriminate against college women's rugby players by only having a 16 team bracket instead of a 24 team bracket. There is no end in sight for the inequality between resource allocation. Maybe when the USA Women's 7s national team qualifies and the USA Men's team does not, their tune will change.

I have to disagree with the previous poster. I think this is a fantastic step forward for rugby in the US. It is about time the Collegiate 7s Championship is based on merit and not on a committee selection alone. This is one of the smartest things USA Rugby has done in a while. As for another poster discussing all divisions' acceptance, I have to disagree with this as well. In tournaments based on merit, if you flood the tournaments with hundreds of teams from D2 and D3, most of those teams would get destroyed and it would be like FBS vs FCS NCAA football games. While both are Division 1, there is a significant playing level difference. I agree some teams may go unrecognized from lower divisions, but they should be focused on developing their program to the point where they can compete in D1 and not expect USA rugby to lower the standard for the POSSIBILITY of an upset. Develop a fan base before you look for drama in the sport. Best way to develop a fan base is with the best teams.

This is a huge step backwards for the spor!!! NBC has committed 14 hours of national coverage to the national tournamnet in June. The stadium is great, the crowd was great, the play was great. Why not play-in for the right to play in Philly in June? Who will travel in mid-December, right before Christmas? Who will watch, it will be football bowl season, basketball starts up and the NFL will be in the final weeks. 3 months away and they don't know where it will be played? They will be lucky to get local public access TV to cover it! Please tell me this ia a huge April' Fool's Day joke. I know it not April, but this seem so counter productive. Please someone tell me it's a joke....
