TheKobeBear A little bit of Rugby 101 for your benefit.....It takes years to develop a rugby players basic skills.....and years with a player developing basic skills is not what the national coaches should be doing......They just don’t have them for that long……that should already have been done by clubs and schools (this happens to be one of the inherent problems in Rugby in the USA......which by the way USA Rugby have been working on for a couple of years already)

In any event you clearly dont have the faintest idea as to the amount of time and energy Salty has poured into many young players careers over many years......as in coaching promising player at his home in his own time (as in over family holidays etc……and for the record he does not get paid for any of it).......you don’t have any idea at all......when you have contributed 1 tenth of what he has perhaps your vile comments would carry some weight (but then I guess if you had done that you would know better than that)

In addition to this you have no idea of what was achieved in the HSAA under Salty this year, what is planned for next year, and beyond.....otherwise you would cringe at the sheer stupidity of your comments…....I don’t know what your issue is, but you clearly have a personal axe to grind (it seems specifically with Salty) but perhaps you would make less a fool of yourself if you found out the facts before blurting out nonsense. As it happens the sponsors of the High School All American program are very happy with the performance of Salty and his team.

This is funny. What lesson is learned? Coaches pay zero attention to developing skilled players? The skill level on the national team is pathetic. US has great athletes with low skill levels. Teach a kid to pass on his weak side before running trying to run someone over. Also, get salty out. He has been at the helm for how long? And what results do the US have to show for it?

Really.......you really dont know what you are talking about and what goes into making an international rugby team. Tom Clayman......your comment is absurd and if you had been there you would know that exactly the opposite was true. what the.......not sure which countries you refer to but your statement is simply not true. Salty and his team are just starting and we will see spectacular results over the next 4 to 5 years

Age grade is a revolving door, new players are coming in constantly. The good thing about Salty being with the HSAA is the rapport he has developed with coaches nationwide and the coaches he surrounds himself with. There is a sense of trust, integrity and knowledge that Salty has no hidden agenda, but only wishes to develop the game in America. Coaches should not be rotated just because time is up. Age grade needs continuity and experience. The necessity to build coaches is a given, however rookie coaches are unaware of the skills, time & commitment required to take on this amatuer role, and it is the kids that will suffer.
The evidence is America is NOT doing enough. Going in to this World Cup with 15's Internationals against only Canada and Japan is not good enough preparation. We are going to get our butts kicked yet again. There is no development from U20 to senior level - that is a huge gap. College level rugby and All Americans who do not play true international sides leave our players underdeveloped and un-prepared to play in a World Cup.

We need the Salty Thompsons of the world to step aside and let others take the helm. This is not an indictment of Mr Thompson. It is of USA Rugby Take a note form other countries and rotate their service - once you have had a three year stint - move on - thank you - now find another outlet for your coaching. We need to develop coaches as much as players.

I think when the opposition scores a try and one of your player's in the sin bin behind the posts 100+ meters away runs the length of the field to head butt an opposing player causing medical attention to be required, you have lost control of your team. Nice spin Alex.

Having re read the article and spotted the deliberate spelling mistake ("schaool" instead of "skule" I couldn't agree more. What is needed is a concentrated drive nationwide on the teaching and coaching of the basic running, passing, handling and contact skills in re ocurring game situations from a very early age and continued well into adult club and national level. Far too often techniques and skills are taught in isolation as opposed to being presented in progressively competitive game situations where pressure is increased according to the level of learning taking place. The task of drawing out rugby intelligence in players and developing tactically aware decision makers can then commence in earnest and players can develop the confidence to play to what is in front of them, assuming the national body deems this to be a vitally important area in the development of rugby in the USA?
