elblindve- That play was one of the great moments in USA Rugby but it was only a moment. One try shouldn't get a guy a pass for 4 years. I doubt that anyone among us would have intersepted the ball and made the stiff arm and pass, however that is why we are reading articles about test matches, not playing in them. Clever is a phenominal athlete, on an athletic level he can compete with any 6 or 7 in the world. However he does not have the field vision, game knowledge and cool headed decision making to be a truly elite player. He frequently runs without support and often over pursues especially when trying to intercept a pass. He plays all or nothing rugby, that makes for some great highlights but it also costs the team possesion and points.

Completely agree with Mr. Manley. Clever is obviously hugely talented, and a great athlete. He seems to have great heart and be a good team motivator, but he still doesn't seem to be the fit for captain. He seems like he needs a captain to pull him back into the game when his "passion gets the best of him." He does make mental mistakes but those can be helped by a good leader there to remind him what needs to be done, and when.

Regardless of the banterous comments here, the disparity in fitness between the two sides is what was shocking. US was not in adequate support during any line breaks. US defense had massive holes in open play with seemingly no communication to mend the problem. US did not play to its strength when inside the 22 and as fitness seemed to be lacking the strength would have been to slow the attack and find strength in numbers. I am not sure if they overtrained out of season players before the game or it was just bad continuity. It was kind of embarrassing.

To all of Clever's detractors. May I remind you of Ngwenya's try against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup? Clever was the architect, pure guts and can do attitude, which have characterized his game since he started. Who among you could have stolen the ball, put a perfect stiff arm and construct what later was known as the try of the tournament? The worst criticism I can say of Clever is that sometimes his passion gets the best of him.

I am constantly (and consistently) amazed by our lack of kicking talent. It's just startling how an international side can get 15 meters out of a potential 40 meter penalty kick to touch. I watched our Canadian friends kick to touch for 40 and 50 meters as we squandered kicking opportunity after opportunity. Do we not practice this skill? It's seemingly way down on our list of priorities, but loses us maybe 150 to 200 meters per game. It always seemed to me that this penalty yardage is playing with the "house's money." If you don't pick it up, you lose. Every yard is precious. If Malifa can't punt it to touch, let's let someone else kick. They couldn't do any worse. And don't get me started on our kicking for points. It's a scandal. We're spotting every team we play 10-15 points on our poor kicking alone.
