Looking at both games vs Canada, the Eagles did improve within a week on some points: better scrum, able to put more phases, find more gaps in the defense. But as I said before, the fact that those players never play together throughout the season is a huge burden, especially when you need continuity, support... And the risk of playing more is the counter-attack. So somehow, this is a "good" problem. However, 2 things must improve before the beginning of the RWC, or at least game against Russia: 1/ goal kicking. They have to put points on the board whenever they can, no question about it. 2/ Even though I like Clever a lot as a player, as a captain, the completely missed opportunity when Canada was down 1 and 2 players was shocking. It's the captain's responsibility to switch tactics according to the situation, in that case, no ball out-wide, work only with forwards, push them tight all the way to their try line... They are on the right track though.

I have to assume that anyone who wants to see Malifa gone at 10 because he's been missing at post (and he has been terrible) has never actually played flyhalf. Malifa is way better than our other options when it comes to kicking into space, timely passing, etc.

Not really quite sure about the hard on everyone has for the Suniula's..They're not that good...they are big boys that run and play like they're 165 lbs...I've seen them play about a dozen or so times and their entire game is finesse. Although, there are times you have to finess it, but there's something to say (physically and psychologically )about dropping your shoulder and running over a defender. No one, esp these guys assert themselves physically. All the previous comments are pretty much spot on from all aspects of the game, but what this team needs, in addition to a clue, is a GOON, a THUG..that type of player who asserts physical dominance in the ruck, scrum or in the type of line they run. To hell with finesse, these boys (USA) need to be harder and meaner...You can have an American football demeanor about yourself in this sport..Own your position, own your opposition and own your territory.

First of all...Patterson was not the captain of the baby blacks. He was captain of the USA U-19s. He grew up (jr hi, hi school) playing rugby and football in Colorado and only moved back to NZ to pursue better rugby. Additionally, though he does play for the HIghlanders in Super Rugby he does not and has never played for Otago in the NPC. He was a Cantabrian, and is now aligned with Southland. Lastly, he is probably the best footballer we could have acquired and might even be useful at fly half.

back three depth says:

Something that no one has talked about is the depth we have in the back 3. Even though some have been out of form (Swiryn, Hawley), some have been impressing lately (Zee, and Scully). With this in mind there is still apparent depth: Ngwenya Swiryn Wyles Scully Palefau Enosa Scully Hawley But the one no one has mentioned is James Patterson. The kid was the captain of the baby blacks and was voted next best thing in New Zealand rugby. He chose us because he didn't want to wait for the all blacks. The 11 spot should be settle when he comes back from his ankle injury. He also starts for Highlanders and Otago. Preferred back 3: Ngwenya Wyles Patterson

"Mark_Canada" Good assessment, but this is is where Canada out-coached USA. They did not contest, because they knew they could turn us over if the ball were moved out or if we tried to drive, the Canada line-out defense could hold them! We never got a good maul going and we should since the USA has pretty big players!
