The referees hold rugby hostage. Refs are afraid to leave the ref "societies" because they may be black balled by the old boys running the show. Teams are afraid to get their own refs for the same reason. Until about 20-40 refs die, this country will continue to suck at rugby. In the NFL the coaches work with the refs to discuss how THEIR game should be officiated. In rugby the refs dictate what they believe to be their game, to the teams. The unprofessional manner in which that so-called premier event was run is disheartening. My athletic director, who accompanied the team, on the trip was absolutely appalled. In particular, the lack of consistency among the referees was truly something to behold. A prime example was the lack of uniform application of rules and regulations, which Ed Todd articulated at the coaches' meeting the night prior to competition. As a coach on the field, I was helpless as the referee utilized his/her personal interpretation of the rules, contray to what had been spelled out by Mr. Todd. Reading this article only confirms my lack of faith in USA Rugby as well as its Referee Department.
