That's why I included the qualifier about having adequate skill. If you lack that, all the hard work in the world doesn't mean a thing. But among people that have it, this kind of commitment is very rare. How many international players from major rugby countries would be so dedicated as to do this if the structures they enjoy did not exist. Not that many, I'd wager.

I agree with the assertion that these guys are extremely committed to each other and towards improving the standard of rugby played by the USA National Team. This commitment is commendable and shows exactly what rugby is all about : how it is not about the individual, but more the performance as a team on the whole. Commitment is, obviously a defining characteristic of any brilliant rugby player (just look at Jonny Wilkinson for example, who is known to put in 110% into every training session and every match. However, commendable commitment is not the only thing that a professional manager would look for. James Simpson-Daniel was axed from the England team earlier this week... just like Wilkinson, he gives it all in training and matches. Rugby in the US still has to develop before there is a significant influx of talent arriving to Europe or the South. I cannot agree that pro-managers would be fighting each other, in order to sign US players just yet.

Obviously our team isn't that good, according to global standards, but this sort of commitment is awe inspiring. I recently read Clive Woodward's book about the 2003 RWC. The resources at his team's disposal in general and especially in the lead up to the world cup were incredible. For our guys to commit themselves like this to go against resources like that...I don't have adequate words. I can't see us winning more than one game. But these are the kinds of men you want on your team. If I were a professional team manager, I would be desperate to sign any of these guys who had adequate skill. As the sport grows in this country (as it is doing), and if we can hold on to this attitude, our national team will have a very bright future.
