doyle - who are you? CIPP dues to pay for RSL...seriously a bad idea... CIPP dues should cover the cost of an annual meeting, newsletter and t shirt for those that want them.. AND...then have USARFU get out of the rugby operations business and into the information gathering and distribution business where they can do little harm.. other sports do not grow with directives from the head office...period.. I still wish USARFU would not have squashed MRL - it was a great concept ... USARFU is closer to being irrelevant than one might think...

The way youth rugby continues to grow, I think another modest increase in CIPP dues would go a long way towards financing the RSL. Right? Anyone? And I don't really see what this "City Based" idea will do to change anything. It won't create money that isn't there. Yes, I know the public doesn't know what an OMBAC is, but I don't see how changing their name to the San Diego Whatevers is going to fill up the Little Q. It's not like the Denver Barbarians, Chicago Lions, or Dallas Harlequins have names that enable them capture the public's imagination.

Well, the teams that have remained in RSL have stated that it is a competition for like minded clubs.... self billed as the top league in the states... it has been a country club league...votes needed to get in...teams can drop out with no notice... it is amatuer rugby elitist style...the english model... forget about sponsorship for this league or others like it in the future... lets get to the point.... we need a winner takes all style league...with a big cash prize at the end ....forget about shared costs for travel...teams would risk the cost if they knew there was a large prize after winning the cup... you heard it here first...again..

Pops - u hit the nail on the head & not to beat a dead horse but i & many others have been calling for a "season" change for a long time. Want sponsors that contribute to USA rugby mens/womens club rugby? Have a single standard season!!! 15's is the game. find that time of the year where a "new" contact sport can gain traction...say spring to early fall. club/college season runs March-June & a regional "super league" from July-Sept wrapping up as the 1st few games of NFL kick-off. 7's could then be a Oct-Nov thing with Dec as a championship month (this is for those that will whine that 7's is where USA rugby should focus).

Move all the current RSL teams down to D1 and creat a top flight City-based league, using the Boston Barbarians side that is being created as a model. One team in Boston, one team in NY, one team in Atlanta, one team in Chicago, one team in Utah, one team in Denver, one team in SoCal, one team in NoCal. Create a viable funding model (easier said than done) and a 6-8 week season after the D1 season in the spring and before 7s ramps up or after 7s season and before the fall 15s leagues start. Lots of things to work out, but it is doable and should have been done already. It was proposed as part of the "high performance" portion of USAR's last strategic plan, but apparently nobody was listening or else nobody saw the value in the idea (which is odd since we see the value in it for senior women's rugby).

I agree with many regarding the overwhelming financial burdens of the RSL. The league will continue to struggle unless USA Rugby determines it to have value for growing rugby in this country. Remaining as separate entities simply isn't working. But if USA Rugby takes over, they will need to shake things up and experiment a bit. We see them raising dues by $10 for the accident insurance, but a $1 dues increase would go a long way in supporting a viable high performance league. A significant initial investment may do enough to improve upon the 6 game season and eventually get sponsors to make it self sustaining. Some people who don't support the league (understandably ) will disagree, which is why USA Rugby is needed. They are responsible for making decisions and investments affecting the future of American rugby.

I am going to sound like a broken record as I wrote this before, but SL won't get sponsors until there is a real season, and not just 6 games, builds a fan base other than family and friends, and learns how to market "the product" and look at it as a business and not just a sport.

There is and always has been a way of distributing travel funds between team in RSL. And there has been a version of relegation/promotion for many years. The problem is that there is not adequate financial support in sponsorship to fund the travel. Players can expect to "invest" well over $1500 to play in the Superleage season. Each player needs to make that call, and unfortunately, when money is tight all around it's a harder call. Good people at every club and at the national level work hard to find sponsorships, but until there is a proven payoff for those sponsors, they will remain small or inconsistent. We can't just look to the "powers that be" to fix it. It has to come from grassroots work by players, administrators, alums, and friends. And we have to accept that there will be ebbs and flows in clubs' ability to field and fund top flight teams.
