This is ridiculous. "Crossover Athletes" should not get a free pass onto their club's first team! Or the national team, for that matter! They should learn the rules and beat out the competition... like EVERYONE ELSE!! I'm in college right now, and I'm working my butt off in the gym and on the field to get recognised by the national team selectors. If I were to work my way up to a point where I deserve a spot, I don't want that spot taken by a college "graduate" (as if many of them take their education seriously) who doesn't deserve it. Caravelli, I've honestly lost respect for you. Sure, miles turned out to be a good player - he probably deserved it. Please don't give spots to those who don't.

I was a former football player (rb) and collegiate all American but didn't make the team because caravelli felt I was too slow. All he cares about, are speed and fitness. Nothing else matters.

Oh please...I've had some teammates over the years who played football (well) at Northern Arizona, which is on the same level as Monmouth and Bethune-Cookman. They were very solid athletes in D2 rugby, but no one would imagine that they would stand out on an RSL team.

"Why not actually use people who can actually PLAY rugby well " by play rugby well do you mean guys who play better than the majority of domestic players that are average athletes, lack sound basic skills and have limited experience?

"I'm sure these guys are all good athletes, but wouldn't most RSL level players have been decent enough athletes to have played college football at places like Monmouth or Bethune-Cookman? " - Absolutely not.

How many times has this cross-over athletes thing worked??? Why not actually use people who can actually PLAY rugby well ...and not give these guys who are probably going to suck anyways a shot...harsh but true... just because a guy can run a 4.4 and bench 225 30 times... doesn't mean he'll be the next Jonah Lomu

DMac77 said it all. Get a million kids into the game and the results will follow in a few decades. We are not now in a position where a couple of tweaks here or there will make any kind of difference. And even if we should strike gold, there won't be a thing sustainable about it. I was reading about the history of AYSO the other day. When it got started (1964) there were a number of soccer clubs around LA, but just a few. Parents were driving a long way each weekend to take their kids to games. (They were also driving them a long way to practice, because the clubs tended to have ethnic, rather than geographic identities.) Except for the ethnic thing, that sounds exactly like youth rugby here now. Maybe, like with AYSO, one parent or local club needs to step out of our SBRO and set up a very local league. Maybe that will be what makes decent growth into explosive growth.

I think we need the best guys also, but the opportunities should be fair and equitable for the cross-overs as well as the current rugby players. I agree with MD that these guys should earn their spot like the rest of the guys on the team not just get an automatic spot just because they're cross-overs. If the cross-overs are having special sessions with coaches and being invited to their home to develop their skills, then the guys who are currently playing rugby should be afforded the same opportunity. That's where there appears to be preferential treatment.

I agree that we need the best players and welcome them to try out but I think the preferential treatment comes when they're sending these guys to special camps, to the coaches home, etc. I also agree with MD that these guys should have to earn their spot like everyone else by playing college or club rugby and should be placed on the team based on their ability against the other guys. How about some special camps and special trips to the coaches homes for the guys who are already playing rugby and have been identified as potentials. I'm sure they would love to have the priviledge as well.
