Surprised but not shocked to see Coach's resignation. Cal Poly and the old ASI clowns always gave us little to no support and were always difficult to work with. Just goes to show how solid of a core of players and coaches we had from the 2001-2006 teams. I applaud Coach Massman for his efforts over the last 8 years with all of the internal and external factors working against him and the teams. He kept the program competitive and always made us one of the fittest teams in the country. It is now time more than ever to continue to the recent success of alumni participation, involvement, and funding to bring our program back to the glory days of giving teams like BYU, Air Force, and Cal a run for their money on the pitch. Cheers Nick, enjoy the SLO life up there.

Thanks for your commitment Nick, you stepped up and dealt with a bunch of crap when nobody else would. It's tough to wrangle a bunch of guys and a school that doesn't support the team, especially with limited assistance. Cal Poly has one of the best track records of all of the DI schools in the last decade. How many top 10 showings did we have, only to fall to powerhouses with full university support like Cal and BYU? It sounds like some of the teams that didn't make it into the CPD are a little bitter and are using Massman as a scapegoat. He held the ship together, but now it's time to find a new captain. Any rugby coaches want to move to beautiful SLO to bring us back to the top?

I am sad to see Nick leave, but I can understand as the University had made no assistance to rugby since it started, and none when I played in early 1970's. One stupid example from the University is that they will not allow rugby to play a home game on campus if it might rain or has in last couple of days! The field is not brand new!

The old saying "If it was easy everyone would do it" seems perfect in this situation. As it is any sane person would run away screaming when it comes to coaching/administrating work in rugby for 98% of all the college and club teams. So the people that do get involved have that affliction called, love of the game and wanting to give something back, which is not terminal but can be very painful at times ( as well as rewarding for breif moments). In Nick Massman you had someone who loved the game and the school. The school administrators do not know what they have lost but the sport does. Thank you Nick for all you have done and all the best in the future.

Excuses. If you can compete in the CPD, which Cal Poly can with all but the top 5 to 6 teams, they should stay. If they are on the verge of total meltdown, they should me mandated to go down to D2. I am sure they would stay in the CPD if that was the choice.

Easy young colt, you may want to save that for the family table. As of now there is no "new staff"...dropping out of the CPD, IF it happens, is more a result of EXTREMELY poor management and undelivered promises from USAR, than Cal Poly Rugby loosing one of their most dedicated coaches in its history.

As a former CPRFC officer, the lack of support from the the school cannot be understated here. In 2004 these gentlemen made the National Championship Match despite of the lack institutional backing. In the years since, Nick Massman and the club were at constant odds with the university over fields, funding and basic administrative support. I applaud Nick for his effort to build a class program.

Mr. Massman Thank you, thank you thank you! The gift (your time, financial, and emotional)you gave to the young men of Cal Poly is priceless. Just look back at the values and life skills the boys received from the program and the positve impact it will have for the rest of their lives. Every parent should be personally thanking you. It is shocking how little support Rugby gets as a club sport in colleges and universities. Every quality program in the country has a few key people who give selflessly their time and money for rugby teams. Colleges need to start helping. The U of MN let's one game a season in the football stadium and the local clubs come out and support the program. A few thousand ticket sales at $10 goes a long way. Just think if very University did that. Thank you Mr. Massman and all the College Rugby coaches and supporters around the country. You make a strong positve impact on the young men.

SLO is a lovely place, but the central coast of California is not blessed with an abundance of jobs. That, and the fact that it draws students from all over the state (unlike the other Cal Poly, whose students are overwhelmingly from within a 30 mile radius) means that most people who go there move on.
