We need MORE XVs rugby, not less. I like both versions, but I'm sorry to say that this move towards more 7s is wrong and not the answer to make the US a better rugby nation. What's wrong with a split season, play a few weeks in the fall, take a winter break if needed and start again in the spring. Keep the playoffs in May and June. Also, we need to make it easier on the colleges and make the playoff rounds in central locations with at least 2wks between rounds.

The NCAA has made Women's rugby a fall sport and correctly so. Here in CO most of the schools do not have indoor facilities, we at CU are the only lucky ones who do. Some of the clubs do not have access to fields until 1 March, regardless of weather. The D1 women have moved their D1 matches to the fall so they can be played in a time frame that gives programs more that 2 weeks to plan a trip to nationals. This schedule gives us 3-4 weeks to prepare for our first league match. If we play 15s in the fall, no different than football, then we can leave the winter/spring for select side, 7s and touring. Remember when we had time in our season to tour, out of country if you could afford it?

Those that argue a late summer preseason would end summer jobs early, realize that by not having Nationals in late May (as this schedule advocates), kids can start work earlier, thus making up the couple of weeks on the other end. Further, look at all the schools on trimesters with fall seasons-- those kids don't start school until mid-September, and yet they're on campus for preseason at the end of August. The fall season can and does work.

FYI-AZ State football practices in an indoor air-conditioned dome. Do we really believe that a fall schedule is going to result in better rugby? And what happens to the CPD? Maybe I am alone, but I feel this proposal, while making life a little easier in scheduling 15's PRACTICES,has no beneficial effect on rugby as a whole. 7's would still have to practice in the snow, yet there seems to be little concern for that, when it would be arguably harder to practice in snow for 7's than 15's. In addition, you shorten the 15's season to in effect 4 months! Is there anyone that honestly believes you can recruit, train,a nd perfect a 15's squad in that time. And in reality its down to 2 months before the actual league games start. Only a month when you factor in most universities dont start till the end of Aug. Please tell me what I am missing that would lead so many to believe this is the path of progress for Rugby in the US,but I just don't see it.

I've been affiliated with a leading Midwest D1 program for the past decade. There have been seasons when outdoor practices (let alone matches) didn't start until April. Three weeks to properly prepare for Nationals - how fair is that? To continue advocating for a system that significantly disadvantages the majority of schools nationwide is flat out unconscionable. The Fall season option proposed by Mr. Pohlidal is not a hypothetical. The Midwest has successfully implemented this format for for years. Is this a perfect solution? No - but it's the best one we have. Not only in terms of equability but also as a vehicle for the continued successful growth and development of collegiate rugby across the entire USA.

AZ and AZ st Football have seemed to manage for decades, in pads no less. No solution is perfect, but there are some facts that needs to - 4 of the unions cannot play rugby for half the spring under any circumstances. - Heat, while not ideal, can be mitigated and dealt with. A fall season would, like football would allow teams nation-wide to compete in a fairer fashion.

Part Deux (Sorry): to the people complaining about the weather in late winter/early spring, you've gotta stop. If weather was key, the SEC schools would rule and Utah would suck- and they don't. The South is Arkansas State and Life- which is a unique creature altogether- and that's it. Stop feeling sorry for yourselves and look at New York City's Xavier High School, which trains and plays in the same weather you do and, oh by the way, has no practice or game fields on campus. It has no campus, period. It's a building on West 16th Street in Manhattan to which the kids commute from all five boroughs beyond. And yet Xavier has played for the national championship 7 times, and won 4 times. If your school is in northern climes, you're either going to start in the cold and snow or you're going to end in the cold and snow. Those are the cold, hard facts. Deal with it-- or as someone else said earlier: fold your tent and move to the Sun Belt.
