@Johnny - No, the top level of Italian rugby is considerably stronger than the RSL. It is genuinely professional. Even Serie A (the next level down) clubs are way above RSL teams in terms of structure, money, facilities, and public recognition. Rodwell at 19 made enough of an impact on a decent Serie A team to get picked up by a Super 10 team. I think he would walk into any RSL team, will be dominant at whatever college he chooses, and will be an Eagle in short order. Also, a difference of 4 places in the IRB rankings is a non-trivial difference.

This is great news for college rugby. Prospects like this are just what the CPD/Division 1 rugby need. To all the critics out there. Why shouldn't he come over to the US play college rugby and make himself available for the Eagles? He was born in this country and if he spends 4 years here he will have residency as well.

So he played professionally in Italy's top division. Would this be the equivalent of playing in the USA RSL? Italy is currently ranked at 12 on the IRB site. USA is at 16.

xenophobia...other than the recent 7's tourneys on a major broadcast television, you usually have to have a primo pkg from your satellite or cable provider to get a channel that plays rugby. take verizon for example...the rugby channel is an additional $14.99 on top of the extreme HD pkg the kid could come here and play for life or palmer's men's side and get an education to boot...but he'd be better off continuing to play in europe and make himself available for eagle camps

I think a lot of people are missing the point. This kid is a rarity; he can qualify for 4 countries according to the IRB. USA- through birth, Germany- through his mother, Italy- through residency and England- through his father. I don't see anything wrong with him playing for the USA, as long as he has the skills and the commitment worthy of the jersey. There are many people who play for a country that might not be their "home country". There are at least 2 kiwis playing for England, Argentines playing for Italy, people from Zimbabwe and Namibia for South Africa, etc... Hopefully the kid gets an education and decides to use his talent for the USA.
