It's a shame to see the lack of coverage of the women's games glossed over by this column and the commenters. You know who was eagerly interested and supportive in watching the CRC coverage? Women, particularly women who have played or continue to play rugby. I enjoyed watching the men's teams tremendously but I had hoped--and was sincerely disappointed--that instead of showing what was supposed to be a fantastic women's final, they re-aired the background of rugby as a sport again. Yes, as noted before, the fact that women's rugby exists is a huge reason why 7s is included in the Olympics. However, women ruggers are also fans and viewers! Snubbing us is an ignorant and a disservice to some of rugby's biggest fans.

Excellent oints by Really and Old Tim eRugby...everythingn should definitely be tried to spead the news and expose the game to many more folks. I had to kinda laugh when I read the idea about Life playing into the tournament. Doubt pretty much they'd be an underdog for long, if they got in....they've got Big Runners and Hard Blasters! Good stuff!

My only point was that you were making an assertion (rugby quality is more important than current fan support in growing the game) which you presented as a logical proof. As to other great rugby schools, sure - invite them if they can come. But recognize that this is a decade-long journey that USA rugby is on. So we can actually test our strategies for growing the game every year using the CRC7s and other opportunities. Personally, I think that broad engagement with the USA sports community is an important element of any strategy to meaningfully grow the game. And a good way to do that is to leverage historic rivalries and relationships. But that's not a fact (at least not until proven). Also worth noting is that the game, as it matures, will use dollars as its currency, not enthusiasm.

In order for Seven's to grow, it needs fan support, new and old. Many articles commented on the large number of Temple fans present. They were very vocal and made there presence known. They made it a fun atmosphere. Could a 'Life University' bring in the fan base? I don't think so. Would a typical TV viewer know who Life University is? I don't think so. The promoters had to weigh school recognition and their team's ability in order to sell tickets and gain TV viewership. I think they did a great job. My only comment: maybe have 4 play-in teams, one from each region of the country. Everybody loves the underdog. Then a school like Life University could get in.

Dear "Really"....please do some research on the multiple top ranked schools who were NOT there,... and simply review their recent wins over most of the schools THAT were in Philly last weekend.....I would love to see some constructive ideas on how to elevate this "7's NBC TV Event" because I do think its exposure is crucial and beneficial to collegiate rugby.

In the "weighted analysis", stop and ponder what's more important(at this stage)in the history(and future legacy?)of televised college rugby: the Quality and Calibar of play, or strictly subscribing to "big name" schools for these Invitational Events? I have a strong hunch that rugby lovers across the nation will watch these rarely seen televised events, regardle ss!!? ... ..Correct? But, at the same time, I doubt a rugby-adoring viewer is NOT going to tune in, if their alma mater isn't playing. The market still gets served. Demonstrate, showcase and exhibit the best playing programs NOW, and I tend to believe all of these "higher" marquee(i.e.larger) schools will eventually be motivated to produce quality rugby teams and programs.. ....It's academic!

I love all this talk. It is great to see this passion for our sport. Many of us said some of teams they had in the CRC would be a flop, and it happened. I think we all feel that more qualifiers for this event would be better. They currently had one. CWU was the qualifying team, and they did well. In a years’ time you will not be able to organize 16 qualifiers, how about we start with four. Maybe take the top two from Vegas and try to organize two more qualifying events. Now, if you want more fans, bring more teams. Maybe not universities (or maybe), but men’s and women’s clubs. Move the event to the end of June so that the 15’s season is finished. Make it a qualifier for the national sevens. Then, let them play the championship games in the stadium, like they did in Vegas. I have not been to PPL so I do not know if they have areas around the park for more games. But, if they don’t, move it to a venue in 2013 that can handle that type of tournament.
