I enjoyed the televison coverage, but with 30-40 million people a three hour drive away, where were the 18 K to fill the venue? San Francisco or Sacramento fans would fill the bloody thing. I like Philadelphia and enjoy the folks there but I'd get a venue with some ticket pressure to get the best seats.

Yes there is the vegas 7's in the west, however, I believe that tournament should move somewhere else as well. The one thing I loved about the CRC this year is they really got kids involved with the "block party" and all the events. That is what grows rugby, hooking people at a young age. I know the old guard of rugby wants to do away with the block party for other events, and wanna party in vegas for the 7's, but those are not family/young fan friendly ideas. Keep the kids happy, and move the 7's around to family friendly cities (i.e. nearly every place but vegas), and watch rugby make strides.

[quote name="Gilitin209"] The only thing for me is as someone who want to go to this tournament every year, I wish it would move around. Midwest, east coast, west, pacific. I think that is how you keep building fan bases, by bringing in new fans every year. I believe the group that runs this event is doing just that with the Las Vegas Sevens in the West (also featuring a large Collegiate Sevens tournament) and this event in the East. Now we need something in the mid-west.

"much better in Philly than Columbus. ...but compared to the 500 people in columbus" OK, I know Columbus didnt have great attendance last year, but look at what weekend they scheduled the event. They held this during the same weekend as the Memorial Tournament. AKA "The 5th Major", and this was done the week before OSU finals... This would be like doing it in Indianapolis during the 500, or in Kentucky during the Derby. Its our biggest Non-OSU football event of the year. And they come here 3 months out and do an announcement, do barely any marketing and expect 10,000 people...? I live in Cbus, I played rugby for years and I didn't even see the announcement and I didn't find out about this until 3 weeks out. Now having said that and having attended both events, I can tell you this year I actually received an email on it, I saw commercials, advertising on team websites...etc. So a much better job was done this year.

Well, I think the situation poses an interesting question. You're talking potential; I was discussing reality. That said, do you host the event in an area of lesser population where you can nevertheless guarantee a solid crowd? Or do you commit several years to a location of substantial population that you hope will translate into increased attendance year after year? @Gilitin209: Perhaps you have the best answer, my friend ...

Hey I don't live in Utah nor am I from Utah. A top 5 market only being able to 5,000 in the stands is pitiful. Making assumptions makes you look very foolish. This may come as a shock to you but TV networks are not always right.

As I have been to both college 7's events, I will admit that this tournament was much better in Philly than Columbus. The fan "block party" was great fun for all ages of fans (tons of kids stuff). And the attendance was WAY up, not perfect yet, but compared to the 500 people in columbus, it was awesome. The only thing for me is as someone who want to go to this tournament every year, I wish it would move around. Midwest, east coast, west, pacific. I think that is how you keep building fan bases, by bringing in new fans every year. Remember, that is nothing against Philly, I just feel its better for USA rugby as a whole for fans all across the country to have a chance to see the event on the cheap. In that same vein, it also would allow more local teams to have a shot at an invite who may not be quite as good as some of the more established teams, i.e. Temple, Boston College, and UNC this year,

I would LOVE to see them get rid of the tents & other BS that were right outside the stadium & have a supplemental open tournament coinciding with the invitational. It just didn't feel right without games on more than one pitch! Would have lent to more of a festival atmosphere as well.

They need to go ahead and have regional qualifiers to get better competition. I understand and can respect the fact they want to tap the more traditional and well followed schools for TV rating purposes, but it's not like Boston College, Central Washington, or Dartmouth have huge legions of fans that are pining at the bit to watch their teams. How a team like Life U doesn't have the opportunity to participate is mind boggling, as they absolutely ran through the Renagade's 7's tournament in Kennesaw, GA this past weekend. There were some really crappy teams in contention this past weekend. The regional qualifiers could be held in the fall, so the qualifying teams would have plenty of time to plan and raise money to attend the CRC at the beginning of June. There would still be a fair share of recognizable "name brand" schools to qualify (Cal, Utah, Arizona, Army, Navy, etc.), but at least the rest of the field would be filled out by quality teams thus producing a better product.

The point being is that there is potential to have more people attend the event in Philly than in the so called mecca of American rugby. Take BYU out of the championship game of the CPD and that event more than likely would've been less attended to than the 7's this past weekend.
