St. Mary's was in control early, and led 38-0 at halftime.

Gaels Head Coach Tim O'Brien said the second half was a bit of a let-down for his squad, but in the first 40 minutes "we got some brilliant passages of team play. We lost much of our intensity and focus as we entered the second half, which is a problem."

Poor execution in basic skills undercut what could have been a really dominant performance. As the same time, said O'Brien, the Aztecs showed some "precise play and wouldn't lie down. They played some superb, hard-nosed and skilful rugby. They stuck it to our starters and full complement of reserves."

The St. Mary's front row of Nick Wallaca, Mike O'Neil and Jordan Bouey all played well, while fullback Tim Maupin repeatedly punished the Aztecs for tries when they tried to kick.

Also garnering attention was the other fullback, San Diego State's freshman fullback Steve Tomasin, who scored two tries.

St. Mary's is now 7-0, just ahead of 6-1 Cal Poly, who won 45-7 over Santa Clara.

Also winners were UC Davis, who upended UC Santa Barbara 30-13, and Sacramento State, who got their first victory of the league season 60-10 over winless Stanford.
