The #13 University of Arizona’s rugby team ended its three game losing streak in league games Saturday afternoon in Tucson with a 55-16 victory over the visiting Colorado State Rams. Mike Getzler led the way for Arizona, personally accounting for 25 Wildcat points.
The win improves the Wildcats record to 2-3 in the CPD West Division and 8-4 overall for the season.
The all-time series between Arizona and Colorado State is now tied at two wins apiece with this Wildcat victory. The Cats have now won the last two meetings between the schools, dating back to a 45-0 Arizona victory in Fort Collins in 2002.
Arizona head coach Dave Sitton gave his thoughts on the victory shortly after the contest.
“I am very happy that we won,” Sitton said. “But we need to keep in mind that we have to improve every time we step on the field. We have two great tests ahead of us on the road, so we can’t place ourselves in a glide pattern.”
The Rams got on the scoreboard first with a penalty kick by Ryan Walker, but Arizona would score the next 15 points of the game on tries by Brett Thompson and Matt Bailey, and a penalty kick and conversion by Getzler. Colorado State posted the final 8 points of the half on a Wes Slinkard try and another penalty kick from Walker.
Arizona strongly opened up the second half, and scored the first 28 points of the period. The four tries were scored by Thompson, Peter Tiberio, Getzler and Jason Fass, with Getzler adding the conversion after each score. CSU’s Marques Vierira scored a try midway through the half to put the score at 43-16, before Fass scored his second try of the game. Getzler earned a hat trick with his third try of the afternoon to close out the contest.
This was the final home game of the season for Arizona, which honored its graduating seniors in a postgame ceremony.
Arizona’s next contest will come next Saturday, April 23, when they will travel to Colorado to face the Colorado Buffaloes in a CPD game at Infinity Park in Glendale. The following week, the Cats will return to the Denver area for the season finale against Air Force, also being played at Infinity Park. Both games can be seen on a tape delay basis on Fox Sports Net.
