Neither coach was particularly thrilled with the day, however, St. Mary’s Head Coach Tim O’Brien will have wanted to have his players challenged more, that’s certain, and said he wanted to see his team be more ruthless. Meanwhile, Olympic Club Head Coach Ray Lehner is seeing the fruits of a group that has relied too much in recent years on the heroics of its tight five. “The back row and the backline will have to step up,” said Lehner. “I am learning that when we don’t bring our absolute best 15 or 22, then we are a very ordinary side. We have been a tight five-oriented team for a while, and we have to make some adjustments now.” For their part, St. Mary’s were outstanding up front and showed once again that they bring more to the table than a wide, expansive game. However, the Gaels continue to struggle with injuries, and with UBC on the horizon on Tuesday, will be hard-pressed. One bright spot for Olympic Club was the play of flyhalf Keegan Engelbrecht. The former Cal star did well under pressure. |
