Arizona Over UNM 63-19
Colleges - College DI-A

Eight University of Arizona players scored tries as the Wildcats cruised to a 63-19 victory over New Mexico on another windy Saturday afternoon in Tucson.

Arizona (CPL Ranking #12) sees their record move to 6-1 on the season with the victory.

This was the final non-conference game for Arizona, which will now play against CPL West division rivals for the remainder of the season.

Due to injuries and rest, many of Arizona’s starters were not in action on Saturday, which allowed the Cats to give playing time to many of the younger athletes on the roster. In all seven freshman started the game for Arizona. Head coach Dave Sitton discussed the importance of using the depth of the program in this contest.

“We started a lot of young people today,” Sitton said. “It showed that this program has a great future. New Mexico was able to earn a few tries against us, but we fought hard for all 80 minutes. Now it is time to focus on the CPL.”

Brandon McKinney got the Wildcats on the board early with the first try of the afternoon. Arizona went on to extend its lead to 34-0 in the first half, with tries from Brett Thompson, Clark Buden, Trent Fischer and Andrew Lundahl, and a penalty kick by Mike Getzler. The Lobos got on the scoreboard late in the half with two tries to cut the score to 34-12. However, Arizona was able to take a 46-12 lead into halftime with late tries from Getzler and Ryan Nance.

The Lobos struck first in the second half with an early try, but the Wildcats would score the final 17 points of the contest on two tries by Kyle Thompson and another try from McKinney.
