Charlotte Catholic and Jupiter (Fla.) duked it out for the South High School Championship Sunday. Charlotte reached the final by defeating Shaw (La.) 36-0 and Chapin (SC) 27-0 on day one, and Jupiter advanced by beating Providence (NC) 15-5 and Kennesaw (Ga.) 22-13. The final was tight at the half, but Catholic poured on the pressure in the second half en route to a 43-12 victory.
In the U19 championship, the Naples Bears (Fla.) we're just too fast for Raleigh (NC). Something the Naples backs had shown all weekend was speed of execution and some great moves with dummy runners, and their tactics lead to a 22-3 victory. Raleigh also never let Naples relax and kept battling to the final whistle.
The Rattlesnakes reached Sunday's final by downing Greer (SC) 10-5 and the Trojans (Ga.) 26-12. Naples' road to the final included a 66-5 win over Mathews and a 24-5 defeat of the Tampa Barbarians.
The girls final was a match up of Kennesaw's physical game against Sebastian's more open running game. The early pressure was all Kennesaw Mountain (Ga.), but Sebastian's defense didn't leak, and eventually Sebastian broke out from defense and got the opening score. Sebastian then got another quick try to extend their lead.
Kennesaw went on the attack, and through interplay between backs and forwards, drove over the Sebastian line for their first try, but this spurred Sebastian to mount further attacks and extend their lead again, eventually winning 24-10. The girls finalists qualified via round robin, besting Jupiter.
Charlotte Catholic, Naples and Kennesaw Mountain all advance to the USA Rugby National Championships with their victories.
