Dixon HS in Northern California took a big step forward by beating a really tough De La Salle team in a comeback victory Saturday in NorCal HS action.
De La Salle pounced on a somewhat injury=hit Dixon team and led 21-12 with about ten minutes to go. Dixon stormed back with two late tries to win 24-21.
"De La Salle played very well," said Dixon Head Coach Rob Salaber. "It was a tough match and could have gone either way."
With the victory Dixon now moves to 6-0 in the Northern California Single-School standings, just ahead of now-4-1 De La Salle. Jesuit sits at 2-0 after shutting out McClatchy 56-0.
Jesuit and Dixon play next weekend, and then Jesuit still will have three matches left - Bellarmine, De La Salle, and PITT, all during a time when other teams have fewer games.
"It will be tough," said Jesuit Head Coach John Shorey. "Dixon I think is still the team to beat, and Bishop O'Dowd is a team on the rise."
Speaking of Bishop O'Dowd, they beat PITT 52-10.
"The score was not a fair indication of how hard the Pirates played," said O'Dowd Head Coach Ray Lehner. "They are a very physical outfit, pretty darn athletic as well. I recall our first season only four years ago and I would say they are well ahead of where we were in our first year."
Lehner said his team played well in some areas but suffered from too many handling errors.
