Ohio Crowns HS 7s Champs
School Age -
Rugby Ohio held their 1st Annual Ohio High School Rugby Sevens State Championship this past weekend. And it was an all Columbus final as Upper Arlington and Westerville would have their rematch from the CORC Final. A match where Upper Arlington won 26-0.
However there would be no redemption for Westerville North on this day as Upper Arlington would go on to win the State Final 40-7 off of another strong performance by Tournament MVP, Jaime Barlow. Jaime scored 1 Try and went 4 of 6 on conversions in the final and he scored a total of 42 points on the day.
"That performance was the culmination of 7 months of hard work by this team. ...and we practiced every night for the past two weeks for this." said Upper Arlington's Head Coach, Mike Coughlin. He went on to say, "Jaime was instrumental in us winning the Sevens State Championship. He's the one who recruited all of his football buddies for 15's and he lead this team in practices all summer. I can't say enough about him. Wheeling Jesuit is is getting a good one..."
The 3rd place match between Cincinnati and Westerville South showcased two of the most electrifying players in the tournament. Rashad Finely from Cincinnati and Abu Darramy from Westerville South. Finely had showcased impressive speed and footwork all day, while Darramy, only 14, had scored three tries before this match.
The Freshman sensation from Westerville ran through the Cincinnati defense and scored three more to pace Westerville South to a convincing 24-5 win over a well-coached Cincinnati team.
"Abu has amazing rugby potential, especially in sevens" said Westerville's Head Coach, John English. "He's only a Freshman in high school, runs close to a 4.4 and has only been playing the game for a little over a month... If he sticks with it, you will see Abu on the National team one day, there is no doubt in my mind. We actually have a lot of talented underclassmen that the U19 All-American Sevens team should be looking at."
Rugby Ohio would also like to announce its All Ohio Sevens Team.
