Michigan’s High School rugby leagues held their championships this past weekend.

Grandville B bested Howell 22-13 in the Division III final. The game was a battle throughout and Grandville B wanted to end on a good note when their A-side lost 7-5 in the semi-final.

In Division II, undefeated Forest Hills (9-0) got past another undefeated Dearborn (9-0). The two squads battled it out for a full 80 minutes and in the end, the result was a 19-19 tie. An extra period wasn’t even enough for either team, so it came down to an old-fashioned kickoff.

Senior and team captain Chris Kemp booted the resulting score for his team and walked away with a gritty 20-19 decision.

In the top tier Division I, West Ottawa steamrolled Rockford 53-13. The Panthers came into the game with a message to send to all other Michigan clubs after losing last year to Grand Rapids Catholic Central in the final.

“With our speed and ability, teams couldn’t keep up with us,” West Ottawa coach Sean McTaggart said on the team website. “And Rockford is a really great team.”

They certainly sent their message clear.  Scoring early and often, West Ottawa were led in scoring by Joey Sok, Jackson Brown and Roman Mares who all scored twice. Senior Dylan Wickoff kicked four conversions to finish his scoring career two points shy of the team record.

“It’s great to finish senior year off with a title,” Wyckoff said. “It was a great last rugby game for us.”

The Panthers finished their year at 12-1 and a top 50 national ranking (47). Moreover, West Ottawa will send three players to DI-AA power Davenport, who recently won the national title over San Diego State.
