California Holds State HS Championships
School Age - Boys

The high school rugby season in California has officially come to a close and it has been eventful to say the least. With both the north and the south battling it out, it’s pretty fair to say that the glory was split between the two sides.

A running contest for both squads with lots of momentum shifts, Bay scored with less than five minutes, but couldn’t get the conversion to go through.

Behind steady performances from Cody Clayton who had a hat-trick with three scores. And solid boots from Mason McCrory and Conner Mooneyham with a combined two penalty kicks and a conversion, the Foothills is looking solid for the future.

For the girls, Fullerton (SoCal) used defense in a thrilling 15-8 win over Motherlode (NorCal). Despite phenomenal performances from Rebecca Bratch (one try) and Gabrielle Schmoeling (conversion), it was Fullerton that held Motherlode up in the scoring zone not once, but twice with less than ten minutes in the game.

Fullerton’s Heather Gauthreaux scored two tries and Harley Moeller had a score as well to lead their team to the state championiship.

In the high school club gold division, Lamorinda (NorCal) took out Oceanside (SoCal) 27-17. In a very scrappy game on both sides, Lamorinda came roaring out of the gates both offensively and defensively to hold Oceanside scoreless at the half.

However, Oceanside exploited a few of Lamorinda’s weaknesses at the breakdowns and scored 3 times in a row by Johnny Delcoure, Severo Perez and Brendan Durham to make a game. But, Lamorinda tightened up its defense late to hold on for the win. Lamorinda was led by the three tries of Karl Thornton.

And in a highly-anticipated single-school final, Jesuit (NorCal) put SoCal's Wilson to the sword 54-12. Although Wilson gave a valiant effort, it was never close. Jesuit scored early and often and never looked back en route to yet another championship.

The entire tournament was hosted by Jesuit in Sacramento.
