Todd Clever helped Suntory move to 8-0 as the Japanese club downed Toyota 45-15. Suntory is in first place in the Japan Top League.
Clever, who normally lines up at flanker, started at lock, left for a blood bin, and was generally gleefully stuck in during the tough work in tight. The USA captain said he was happy to help out.
“There was an injury in the second row, and I raised my hand to fill the spot,” Clever told RUGBYMag.com. “I feel comfortable playing numbers four through eight, or on either of the wings.”
Clever played wing for the Lions in Super 15 when the team was slammed with injuries during the 2010 season.
Playing a little lock won’t hurt Clever’s marketability. The American’s contract is up in a few months, and he has said previously that he is looking at options. As the most recognizable and celebrated current American rugby player, he should be fielding a number of offers.
Meanwhile, Suntory may have lost the services of their Director of Rugby, as Eddie Jones signed on as the Head Coach for the Japan National Team, the JRFU announced Monday.
